Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan's most beloved animation directors. A wonderful companion book to The Secret World of Arietty (the film)

My seven-year-old and I are great fans of Studio Ghibli productions and watched The Secret World of Arietty last weekend. In the tradition of Hayao Miyazaki's animated films, Arietty (screenplay by Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa, directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi) is full of wonder and vivid, detailed hand-drawn animation.

Inspired by Mary Norton's The Borrowers, The Secret World of Arietty centers on a family of little people called The Borrowers, who live in a quiet old house set amidst nature. The family of little people comprise father Pod, over-anxious mother Homily, and teen daughter Arietty who is a budding explorer and yearns for adventure.

The borrowers' quiet existence is brought to an end with the arrival of twelve-year-old Shawn, a sickly young boy who has been sent by his parents to his aunt's house in the country, while he awaits to undergo an operation. Shawn has heard stories of the little people from his mother, and when he spies Arietty flitting among the flowers one day, it changes the course of both their lives. Can a 'bean' (human being) be friends with a borrower? Or are their worlds incompatible?

This beautifully-illustrated picture book/ graphic novel contains lots of color illustrations as seen in the movie, with text to accompany the illustrations. There is enough text here to convey the essence of the story, and my seven-year-old was completely absorbed in the book, reading independently and delighting in the illustrations. I'd recommend this to fans of the movie, and for anyone who appreciates a well-illustrated story.

My daughter and I both liked it

My 5-year-old daughter and I really enjoyed reading this together. The art is beautiful and we root for the characters. She had previously enjoyed other Studio Ghibli picture books, My Neighbor Totoro Picture Book (The Art of My Neighbor Totoro) and Kiki's Delivery Service Picture Book[ KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE PICTURE BOOK ] by Miyazaki, Hayao (Author) Jun-01-06[ Hardcover ]

The Secret World of Arrietty Picture Book

I watched the movie with my two grandchildren, Nicholas 9 and Victoria 5. This was the first time ever that Victoria sat still and was totally captivated by Arrietty and the story. I bought the book for her for Christmas because she will be delighted to have more of Arrietty. The book is perfectly beautiful and follows the movie exactly. I highly recommend it.

About the Author
ALEX ROSS studied illustration at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, then honed his craft as a storyboard artist before entering the comics field. His 1993 miniseries Marvels created a wider acceptance for painted comics. He moved on to DC Comics to produce the equally successfulKingdom Come, the Earth X projects for Marvel, and a series of tabloids for DC, which have been collected in The World’s Greatest Super-Heroes. Receiving critical acclaim and multiple awards for these best-selling works, Ross made a name as both an artist and a storyteller, dedicating himself to bold experiments within the comics medium. Most recently he has worked on Flash Gordon andThe Shadow for Dynamite Entertainment. His non-comics work includes creating the poster for the 2002 Academy Awards, the opening credits for Spider-Man 2, and multiple covers for TV Guide. Ross lives in the Chicago area.
 
CHIP KIDD is the four-time Eisner Award–winning designer and author of Batman: Animated, Peanuts: The Art of Charles M. Schulz, and Mythology: The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross. [[VIDEOID:mo36SMHKRZ41PGY]]I would say this book is as good as Mythology: The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross, his other art book featuring his paintings.

In this book, we see the groundwork he lays for those paintings. There are sketches storyboards and layouts, character designs, covers and hand scribbled notes. Many of the sketches, like various iterations for covers, are appearing from the first time. And it's not really all black and white, there are a few pieces painted quickly with colour for quick colour tests. I've to add that the scans are really good also, showing off the marvelous shading and grain.

You get to see the final pencil stage, before shadows and paint are added, as he focuses on the contours and surfaces. The usual powerhouse cast of DC characters are all in: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Black Canary, and many more. But it's not all character art. There are also design sketches for the Justice Batmobile, logo designs and concepts he did for a literacy campaign (which shows Batman hanging from a stone gargoyle from some skyscraper while reading a book).

The drawings look really quite different without the colours and I could barely recognise to compared with the original paintings from his previous book. But make no mistake, the same flair and realism is still there on every page. You can still see the intense attention paid to the detail of musculature, composition, lighting, facial expression, drapery and mood.

There's also commentary by Alex Ross himself, in addition to the hand scribbled notes. He talks about his designs, the creative process and on why some ideas just didn't make the cut.

Highly recommended to fans and comic artists.

Absolute Awesome Sketches

I was really looking forward to this since first hearing about it. This really is an excellent companion to any of Ross's other books , being that this book is mostly pencil renderings with a few colored works. It also gives Alex's own personal insight on a lot of the projects that did and didn't make it past the proposal stage. That to me is really some of the coolest stuff because this might be the only real chance to see some of that work that isn't going anywhere. (Alex's rework of Captain Marvel) . If you are a fan of Alex's work or concept ideas in comics, then you should pick this book up !

I like it ROUGH

Chip kidd designed a hardbound collection of Alex Ross's concepts, which turns out to be spectacular stuff indeed.
I am WOWed by this and so glad that it graces my book collection: This is what the "process" actually is, and rarely do we have this type of insight into what could be.

I was impressed by a weird spread, typical Kidd stuff: an extreme blow up of what was probably faxed Ross sketches of two heroines. That kind of stuff is what makes Chip Kidd the patron saint of book designers: he catches something mysteriously there but overlooked in the pencil lines, the xeroxed image and the flair of a brushstroke: everything that is the soul of the work. Here it is all over again, the Kidd touch to homage an artist's work, and like his PEANUTS collections, showing us that he's at an atomic level of examination of the work.

Ross contributes notes on it all, which shows where the good ideas generate and why.

If eery picture tells a story, ROUGH JUSTICE is a lot of stories. Your fav fanboy will adore this! I sure do!

"Secure and Resilient Software Development" by Mark Merkow and Laksh Raghavan is a really good book. It addresses a key security area that is generally given short shrift, even though purportedly more than 70 percent of breaches result from attacks on the application layer. The book is one of only a handful of texts about information security written by practitioners for practitioners. Even fewer practitioner books address software security ... and most of those have been written or co-authored by Mark Merkow! The majority of publications in the field of software security are written by academics or vendors' employees, both of whom have their own agenda. The former group is dominated by publishing or perishing; whereas the latter generally promote particular products or methodologies supplied by their employers. The true value of Mark and Laksh's book is that it is both impartial and extremely informative.

The book is comprehensive. It covers areas with which most infosec professionals and software developers are not likely to be familiar. For example, the authors recount the history of application security testing as far back as the Orange Book and Common Criteria (CC). Incidentally, Mark co-authored an excellent book on the CC, namely "Computer Security Assurance Using the Common Criteria" (Thomson, 2005). In the current book, issues with the CC approach are raised ... and by someone who should know!

Among the many useful chapters, I personally derived the most from Chapters 8 and 9, which are about testing custom applications and commercial-off-the-shelf software respectively. I also was interested in reading Chapter 11 on metrics and maturity models. I found the coverage of these topics to be extensive, although I have my own opinion regarding the lack of meaningful metrics for security in general and application security in particular.

I suspect, however, that many readers will be more interested in the design and coding phases of the SDLC (software development life cycle), rather than the testing phase. And these readers will not be disappointed. It was encouraging to see that resiliency is given top billing, as it is often neglected by developers, although software engineers might well see the importance of building resilient systems.

Having given the reader a taste of what he or she needs to know in order to produce or acquire secure and resilient software, the authors point the reader to sources of further education, including the various certifications that can be earned.

The book is rounded out with a very helpful glossary of terms, and a couple of appendices. The first covers the top 25 most dangerous programming errors (according to CWE/SANS), and the second describes OWASP's Enterprise Security API project.

All in all this is a book packed with valuable information for those designing, developing or supporting secure and resilient software. It is full of useful and actionable suggestions. And it fills a gap that really needed filling. It gives the reader a sound grounding and good understanding of the issues relating to the development of secure and resilient software and points the reader in the right direction for building further upon the base established by the book.

Secure Development and enterprise assurance programs

In the interests of full disclosure, I should start by noting that I am slightly biased. Both of the two authors, Mark Merkow and Laksh Raghavan, work on my team.

They are a perhaps an ideal pair of book authors because they have such complementary viewpoints and skills. I have known Mark for - good grief! - about twenty years. There is a great deal of solid theory that underpins information security, and Mark is one of few practitioners who both understand this theory, as well as know how to put it into practice. This is surprisingly rare. Laksh, on the other hand, is one of the best application security guys you'll ever meet. He knows the theory and the practice of both how to defend and attack applications. (They're both really nice people too, although that might be less relevant to their writing skills.)

Individually, they're both very strong. In combination, they and - therefore this book - are very, very good. The book builds from a firm theoretical foundation, and works up into a detailed explanation of the various ways in which applications and systems can be attacked, and how these attacks can be defeated by careful system design, coding and testing. It takes that and then moves into the ways in which enterprises can build full-blown programs to secure their applications, and finally into emerging industry standards such as BSIMM & OWASP.

I have a bunch of security books on my bookshelf, and the majority of the ones on secure / resilient software practices are not great. This, on the other hand is one of those rare books that is both interesting and informative on the first read, and very helpful as a reference work on subsequent reads. Strongly recommended.

About the Author

Don Poulton (A+, Network+, Security+, MCSA, MCSE) is an independent consultant who has been involved with computers since the days of 80-column punch cards. After a career of more than 20 years in environmental science, Don switched careers and trained as a Windows NT 4.0 MCSE. He has been involved in consulting with a couple of small training providers as a technical writer, during which time he wrote training and exam prep materials for Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. Don has written or contributed to several titles, including Security+ Lab Manual (Que, 2004); MCSA/MCSE 70-299 Exam Cram 2: Implementing and Administering Security in a Windows 2003 Network (Exam Cram 2) (Que, 2004); MCSE 70-294 Exam Prep: Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure (Que, 2006); and MCTS 70-620 Exam Prep: Microsoft Windows Vista, Configuring (Que, 2008).

 

In addition, he has worked on programming projects, both in his days as an environmental scientist and more recently with Visual Basic to update an older statistical package used for multivariate analysis of sediment contaminants.

Passed with help of this book

I recently took and passed the 70-680 this morning by using this book. I feel it is only fair to say that it was not my only source but one of my main sources of study.

I personally thought the exam in the book was harder than the actual test. Not the chapter exams, the exam on the CD. With that being said, I would say if you can pass the test on the CD, you can pass the actual exam. I really enjoyed the pre-test format of the book. Each chapter began with a pre-test that would help you determine if you should read the entire chapter, a section of the chapter or just skip to the review topics point in the chapter. Every chapter also included a memory table with keywords that you were asked to fill out from memory. I did that for every chapter and it really helped when I saw questions I didn't recognize but could eliminate due to knowing exactly what a option was or what it did.

I think the most obvious question people will have about the book:
Deployment section - Although I did not use all of the commands in this book to lab for the deployment(I used CBT Nuggets and Train Signal) the beginning ones I used were fine. As I am sure some of you know, the MS press book is riddled with errors, so much there is an errata thread about it. I only state this because as soon as you start using the commands from the MS press book you are met with commands that don't work. And that adds to an extremely frustrating lab experience.

In conclusion, I believe this book should definitely be added to any study regiment when preparing for the 680 exam. With all the information in this book, you can probably pass with this alone but I would not recommend that. These types of exams are heavy on understanding and being able to do things. The only way to ensure both is by experience(in other words labs)

I hope this review is helpful to all those that come across it. I don't write reviews much but seeing as how this book has none and it IS a good source. I figured why not.

Use with other materials

After reading the glowing reviews of the book I placed an order for it while waiting in anticipation. I spent about a month with the book, know it fairly well inside and out. I have done all of the exercises on different setups (different machines, virtual environments) many times until I could almost do them with my eyes closed. Took the test and failed by two questions. The books fault? I wouldn't entirely blame the book and here are my reasons.

As we all know the certification tests are continuously updated. I'm sure at the time of this book's release it matched the questions on the exam well. The exam I took demonstrated the weakness of the book I wasn't ready for: every remote access question you will not find in the book (the areas I mention in the next few sentences are scattered in the objectives under different categories but generally they have to deal with remote access and management and to keep it simple I will label them as such). The exam had, literally, almost twenty questions on BranchCache. The coverage on BranchCache in this book is extremely small and only sufficient to answer some of the questions. Accessing remote machines with PowerShell. PowerShell is mentioned in the book, nothing more. Questions about DirectAccess and WinRM that were on the exam were not in the book. The only topics that were covered well enough for the exam were the Remote Desktop Protocol and Remote Assistance.

I am 100% sure about the coverage of the material because before I took the exam the testing site I went to notified me that they were unable to print a report card for Microsoft-based exams (due to a bug they said) so I took the liberty of writing down the type of questions I encountered that I knew nothing of (on the provided dry-marker board), memorized the list as best as I could before I left (not the answers or exact wording of questions mind you, I am totally against brain dumps, just a word or two about the question), wrote it down when I got out and compared it to the book and they just don't exist. After calling Prometric a couple days later I was able to get my report card and sure enough, I had every area perfect or near perfect except for the previously mentioned areas.

Do I blame the book? I wouldn't as the book really does cover a lot of material and I would recommend it for anyone. I'm confident the book matched the exam well when it came out but comparing the material to the test I just recently took it is clear that this book should be used with another source and not by itself like a lot of the reviews claim though to be fair some of the reviews are around the book's publishing date and do not think the commenters were naive at the time of their posted date.

Good book overall.. Not had the time to test to see if i can get the questions to come up to study from. Mostly just got the book to get certified because that is what the company wanted you to have. Not sure any other real reason to buy a book like this. Topics are covered, just take time and it will come.

Great book and very practical!

This is a great book, Ray Deck III has made it possible for every person to be creative. By looking at creativity more as a learned skill and less as a gift this book provides practical and DAILY exercises that will assist you and me in our creativity. I highly recommend this book.

Abundant creativity help for us non-creatives

I've said for a while now that there's not a creative bone in my body. If 1 out of 5 people are a "creative" and I'm in a room with 4 other non-creatives, I'm still not the creative and the statistic is broken.

RayDeck3 has an uncanny ability to take the non-creative like myself on an unbelievably easy brain-expanding exercise in creativity. This book has helped me not only try to think outside the box, but imagine a new box, invent the box, build the box, and then come up with several new ways to market the box. Ray's writing style is both simple and profound.

I am sure that this book will be a regular resource of mine for years to come. Don't pass it up.

Think, Dream, Act ... Create

This little book does deliver what the title promises ... one hundred discussions on the nuts and bolts of creativity. Some are repetitive in nature and purposefully so, the act of creating is a full of repetition. Though most of the concepts were not new to me, I found the book to be enjoyable and at times actually thought provoking.

This is a subject of lifelong fascination for me. What drives us to create and the paths we travel to do so. I approached this book not necessarily needing help with coming up with ideas. -- I currently have enough of them to keep a cloned team of five busy for a few lifetimes as it is. -- It was more for the chance to explore other perspectives on what creativity is. However, if I did ever need help getting the ideas flowing some of the sections may indeed prove quite helpful. And not just with the start up point of a project, there are topics covered to help you move along the course all the way to completion. As well as some tips on how to move straight on to your next endeavor.

I would happily recommend this book to anyone who is perhaps a little nervous about taking those first steps to bring an idea from concept to tangible product.

For more than thirty years, philosopher Bernard Gert has been developing and refining his distinctive and comprehensive moral theory. His classic work, The Moral Rules: A New Rational Foundation for Morality, was first published in 1970. In 1988, Oxford published a fourth revision titled Morality: A New Justification of the Moral Rules. In this final revision, Gert has produced the fullest and most sophisticated account of this influential theoretical model. Here, he makes clear that morality is an informal system that does not provide unique answers to every moral question but does always limit the range of morally acceptable options, and so explains why some moral disagreements cannot be resolved. The importance placed on the moral ideals also makes clear that the moral rules are only one part of the moral system. A chapter that is devoted to justifying violations of the rules illustrates how the moral rules are embedded in the system and cannot be adequately understood independently of it. The chapter on reasons includes a new account of what makes one reason better than another and elucidates the complex hybrid nature of rationality.

Although Gert's moral theory is sophisticated, it is presented with a clarity that enables it to serve as an excellent introduction for beginning philosophy students, as well as fruitful reading for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. Unlike most moral theories, his account of morality is developed in sufficient detail to be useful to those interested in problems of applied ethics. This book will appeal to those engaged in business ethics, engineering ethics, environmental ethics, and especially medical ethics. In the manner of the works of Thomas Hobbes and John Stuart Mill, this book addresses the general philosophical reader and at the same time makes an important contribution to the philosophical literature.

A native Cincinnatian, like myself, moral philosopher Bernard Gert has been the only author who has defined morality in a way that is not only understandable but profoundly affecting and real. A book to be read slowly, taking notes, absorbing every notion or explanation put forward by the author. Gert died in 2011 but his writings will remain as a pillar of our understanding of what is right or wrong without resorting to supernatural beings, just looking inside ourselves for what rules and ideals will diminish suffering, pain, and evil.

A practical presentation of morality

If you are interested in reading about morality in a manner that is easy to understand and that seems to make sense, this is a good book to read. His idea that morality should be presented in a manner that the public can easily understand is admirable. Too often authors present ideas in a manner too dificult for the "lay person" to understand. This book is a pleasant read on morality.

In this book Bernard Gert takes a new approach to ethical theory, abandoning the old stance of special or unique knowledge of morality. Instead he seeks to discover and justify the moral rules by examining our moral judgements. Using this method he captures morality and its rules to a degree not before seen. I cannot recommend highly enough reading this text.

The book demonstrates how practical modes of thinking that were typical of the sixteenth century resulted in new genres of plays and a new vocabulary for problems of poetic representation. In the epistemological moment the book recovers, we find new ideas about form and language that would become central to Renaissance literary discourse; in this same moment, too, we find new ways of thinking about the relationship between theory and practice that are typical of modernity, new attitudes towards spatial representation, and a new interest in both poetics and mathematics as distinctive ways of producing knowledge about the world. By emphasizing the importance of theatrical performance, the book engages with continuing debates over the cultural function of the early modern stage and with scholarship on the status of modern authorship. When we consider playwrights in relation to the theatre rather than the printed book, they appear less as 'authors' than as figures whose social position and epistemological presuppositions were very similar to the craftsmen, surveyors, and engineers who began to flourish during the sixteenth century and whose mathematical knowledge made them increasingly sought after by men of wealth and power.
