Wonderful Romance

A Marriage of Inconvenience by Susanna Fraser is a recent ebook release by Carina Press. It is also a good example of why my TBR pile grows instead of shrinks. I read and loved The Sergeant's Lady by Susanna Fraser and when I saw A Marriage of Inconvenience I immediately purchased and started to read. I knew from a comment Susanna made on my post for The Sergeant's Lady that this book would be a prequel that told the story of Lucy and James, two secondary characters from the previous book.

Lucy Jones is a poor relative living with the Arringtons. She has recently become secretly engaged to her cousin Sebastian. When the Arringtons travel for Portia Arrington wedding Lucy meets James Wright-Gordon. James's sister Anna meets and is attracted to Sebastian. When the Arringtons' fortune takes a turn for the worst the lives of all four are changed.

Susanna Fraser writes a well-plotted character driven story. Lucy and James are both likable people who try to do what is right even when it turns out wrong. It was interesting to see how Anna from The Sergeant's Lady ended up married to Sebastian. A added bonus was hearing how everyone was doing several years later in the Epilogue.

Realistic historical novel

Lucy Jones is an orphan. She lives with her wealthy relatives but no one wants her. Or so she thought until her cousin, Sebastian Arrington, proposed marriage to her. She was shocked but, as much as she adored her cousin, could not help but notice that he does not love her and behaves in a peculiar manner towards her. Unfortunately, an unfortunate incident results in the end of the engagement. As a result, she learns more about Sebastian's true character than she has ever known but does not tell anyone.

In between her engagement and its termination, she meets James Wright-Gordon. James, also known as Lord Selsley, is a Viscount with a seat in Parliament. He is powerful and rich from wealth left to him by his parents who both died when he was young. When he and Lucy are caught in a compromising situation, they are forced to marry.

Not only do they need to learn to love each other, they also have to learn how to make their marriage work when James discovers Sebastian's true character and Lucy's mistake in not revealing it.

I like the way humor was intermingled with more serious parts in A MARRIAGE OF INCONVENIENCE. Lucy and James's bantering helped lighten the mood and provided a realistic outlook of married couples' conversations.

There is a scene in which Lucy tells her life story to James that seemed improbable to me as you usually do not tell a virtual stranger personal details about your life. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed reading A MARRIAGE OF INCONVENIENCE. The story's plot is fast moving and there are no lapses. In nearly every scene, there is action and suspense.

Overall, I'd give A MARRIAGE OF INCONVENIENCE high marks. The story is enjoyable and readers can pick up bits and pieces of historical facts. A well-researched book, this is definitely one I'll re-read.

I doubt I'll read another of the author's books

I was enjoying this book in a sedate, ordinary kind of way until about mid way through. Once again the H (like in the other book of this author's) had a previous love whom he had wanted to marry and he told the h about her early in their marriage. I just find it hard in a romance to be reading about 'the one who got away'. I was hopeful at the beginning that the H was falling in love with the h and we could avoid the previous love. No such luck. Anyway both books that I've now read by this author are not books of grand passion but rather ones of quiet love where feelings have grown. I can't explain this very well other than to say it all feels quite insipid.

I was extremely annoyed by the H's reaction to the news that the h had been engaged secretly to the H's sisters husband before, and not told him. He was more passionate in reacting to her 'betrayal' than he was in admitting his love for the h.

I like the author's style of writing but I can't read another story like this again. I want to read grand passion or great love stories, not this style of quiet but unsatisfying romance.

Magical! Get an insider's view on Peru, from a gifted steward of the Earth.

My husband and I had the incredible honor of meeting and traveling with Jorge Luis Delgado in Peru a few weeks prior to the release of this book. We went to Peru to visit the sacred sites and were blessed with Jorge as our local guide. We had no idea beforehand!

Jorge is authentic, warm and caring individual who treats people as extended family members. He is also a virtual encyclopedia of knowledge on the mystical and sacred of Peru and an excellent teacher. Reading this was like being there with him again, in all the splendor and radiance of the magic of Peru that Jorge truly embodies as a person and beloved shaman. Jorge 'lives Peru'--he doesn't just study the teachings and the history and report--and he shares his wisdom beautifully in this book.

Wow!

If you have ever thought about travel to Peru, to see it's people and places then this book is very informative. But what a trip! This book is like the Holy Grail of Peru. It focuses on mystical Peru. Even if you never travel to Peru it will take you on a fascinating journey. It is also a fascinating story of a real Shaman living in our own time. A must read for anyone interested in Peru or mystical journies.

I expected more

I liked this book very much because it is the first book I read about a person with actual Inca blood figuring out more about the tradition. It is a refreshing departure from all these stories about sheltered Americans who venture out into the unknown world of them scary Indigenous people because of this or that. But like many stories about people connecting with something different, I felt that the book didn't really speak to me. I enjoyed learning more about the Inca traditions, since I myself am part Inca, but there was something missing. Could it be because the author makes a living bringing tourists to the same locations he talks about in the book? Not sure. I do think that he is honest in his spirituality and wishes to share it with the world, and since he has experience with tourism, well.... But I was hoping that the book would not be so much another story of personal discovery, but that in reality it would be the Guide To Mystical Peru the title offered.

The book is well written, and the story interesting and compelling. The author vividly and accurately describes the areas in a very enticing manner. This is why I am giving it 3 stars. I liked very much learning more about the Lake Titicaca area, and thanks to this book I now hope to visit the region. Maybe some of you would rate it higher. But this book was not what I was hoping for when I bought it.

A Great Resource

This book is a valuable resource for students of Plato's dialogues and letters (authentic or otherwise). The author writes in her introduction that she has also "included for convenience persons from the Socratica of Xenophon, Aeschines, Antisthenes, and Phaedo, and persons associated with Plato's maturity." She states that she "aimed to write a useful book, a one-volume reference to the people of Socrates' milieu that could also assist further research on these individuals." I have not and will not read the book cover to cover. However, I will keep the book handy and consult it as I continue my study of Plato and Xenophon, in particular.

Although the book is somewhat expensive, it is not necessarily more expensive than many academic books. I was fortunate to receive an Amazon holiday gift card and decided to use it, in part, for this book. I believe this will prove to be a wise investment.

The People of Plato: Endless Fodder for the Imagination

This book is great for a Plato-lover. There are so many characters in Plato, and this book gives you all the little tantalizing details that help you to envisage what it was really like to walk and talk with Socrates. Oh, and this book is an invaluable resource for the serious Plato scholar. It is a reference book, not the kind of book that you read cover to cover, but it is the kind of reference book you can flip through at a spare moment and enjoy what you stumble upon. Yes it is expensive, but if you are dedicated to Plato it is worth it.

Generalities Timeless; Details Dated...

This classic reference the obvious product of experienced academics.
The only downside for me was that I intentionally chose a
pre-Object-Oriented-Programming text (copyright 1983) so
I could practice coding with Java from examples in
a similar language but the only code in
the text is from esoteric DYNAMO...
