An Exciting New Fantasy

Hal Emerson has created a vivid and exciting fantasy world, filled with well-drawn characters that command attention and affection. Though one may sense hints of Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones Emerson's world stands proudly on its own and demands attention. Emerson has a gift for detailed description and every landscape, battle, and sojourn leaps off the page. The story is complex but thoughtfully imagined and keeps the reader wanting more. I can't wait for book three.

Even better than the first part!

"The prince of Exiles" starts shortly after where the "The Prince of Ravens" left. There's one small, but very important difference though - here I am not torn between hugging Raven and hitting him with something really heavy, lol. In the first part, I really enjoyed reading about his struggles, but all the time I was all like "Oh. please, oh, please, oh please, don't make anything stupid!" Here and now, Raven is slowly developping into a true Prince, a true leader... and it all makes my fangirl heart so happy! :D There were quite other things, that helped, too:
Friendship. I immensely enjoyed the relationship between Raven, and Tomaz and Leah. And in the first book - especially with Tomaz - it really made me cry at some parts. And here, things get even cuter, with Raven trying to figure out what friendship really means. And adding the other Kindred he communicates with - like Davydd for example. Oh, in the first book, I wasn't sure how I felt about him, now I know - I absolutely love him! And Goldwyn - oh, dear, that man was amazing, tho some of the conversatuons with him was such a brainf**c that I felt sorry for the poor Raven. Some things that i didnt quite get from the first book, now became more clear - like Leah and Davydd's past for example.
And romance! Yay! Now this is something I really missed. Leah and Raven were so cute and akward and silly together, and their rare moments made me melt.
Raven in charge. Okay, it is just he was so awesome, in the city of Roarke, or in the tunnels, or standing there and giving that beatiful speach, and racing and ....err... well girl needs her hero, lol! But it was really cool to wactch him grow, from denial to belief, to the point that you, as a reader, feel proud and so happy for him.
Bad guys. Yup, we need them. As mentioned, I just didn't have it in my heart anymore, to keep bad feelings for Raven. And this is good, because I just have a limited amount of hatred - and I needed it all to go to Henri Perci. And at one point, Leah too.
Twists and turns, and spins.... The end was - oh, dear. For some parts of the plot, I had a good guess - like Davydd having a Talisman - and the hope that HP will be a bad guy, but the last chapters left me with my jaw dropped and my heart twisted.
Ahh, and maybe I should add, that I have a fangirlish fascination for the moments where one of the main characters gets hurt and the other is all worried and takes care.
The one and only thing that didn't make me happy about this book - is it just me, or their Midwinter celebration was quite in the spirit of Christmas? Presents, evergreen trees, holy, wreaths? I decided not to make analogies and pay attention to how the Kindred imagine the hell in the first book, but really, I think something new and different could be put up instead.
In terms of spelling, I didn't spot any major mistakes. However, I think there were quite some missing commas - mostly in dialogues, when addressing someone, after exclamations and such. This goes for "The prince of Exiles" and for "The prince of Ravens" as well (I read the Smashword edition).
And in the end - the cover. I usually begin review with few words for the cover, but this time I will end with it. The art is really good and the artist is undoubtedly very skilled. But when I first saw the book, my thought was "Heeey, where's my pretty boy!" As I went reading, I figured out that this is probably Geofred but it didn't make sense to me. And when I closed after reading the last chapters... it made perfect sense. The prince of Eagles deserved it like no other to be there.
And now, I just hope that the next part will be out soon. Ooh, and I so hope it'd be called "Prince of Veil", lol! The end of the book triggered my imagination and it is now running wild. And one other thing that I am dying to find out is Raven's real name, that was taken from his Mother. Oh, I hope it is a good one!
And as about recommending - this series has the kind of books that got me so so so frustrated that some of my best book-loving friends are not good enough in English when I know that if they read it, they will absolutely love it. I did however drop a word about it to my English speaking friends and I even envy them a little for the awesome moments when they will get through the story for a first time.

One of the most beautifully crafted books I have ever read, with some of the most poetic prose passages I could imagine, such as the following, resonating with a stately and timeless quality so absent in our modern life: There are all kinds of silences and each of them means a different thing. There is the silence that comes with morning in a forest, and this is different from the silence of a sleeping city. There is silence after a rainstorm, and before a rainstorm, and these are not the same. There is the silence of emptiness, the silence of fear, the silence of doubt. There is a certain silence that can emanate from a lifeless object as from a chair lately used, or from a piano with old dust upon its keys, or from anything that has answered to the need of a man, for pleasure or for work. This kind of silence can speak. Its voice may be melancholy, but it is not always so; for the chair may have been left by a laughing child or the last notes of the piano may have been raucous and gay. Whatever the mood or the circumstance, the essence of its quality may linger in the silence that follows. It is a soundless echo. Born in England in 1902, Markham was taken by her father to East Africa in 1906. She spent her childhood playing with native Maruni children and apprenticing with her father as a trainer and breeder of racehorses. In the 1930s, she became an African bush pilot, and in September 1936, became the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic from east to west.

Markham's West with the Night was originally published in the early 1940s and disappeared, only to be rediscovered and reprinted in the 1980s when it became a smash hit. This latest incarnation is a lavishly illustrated edition. Though Markham is known for setting an aviation record for a solo flight across the Atlantic from East to West-hence the title-she was also a bush pilot in Africa, sharing adventures with Blor Blixen and Denys Finch-Hatton of Out of Africa fame. Hemingway, who met Markham during his safari days, dubbed the book "bloody wonderful."

I knew her fairly well in Africa and never would have suspected that she could and would put pen to paper except to write in her flyer's log book. As it is, she has written so well, and marvelously well, that I was completely ashamed of myself as a writer. I felt that I was simply a carpenter with words, picking up whatever was furnished on the job and nailing them together and sometimes making an okay pig pen. But [she] can write rings around all of us who consider ourselves writers. The only parts of it that I know about personally, on account of having been there at the time and heard the other people's stories, are absolutely true . . . I wish you would get it and read it because it is really a bloody wonderful book."--Ernest Hemingway

Classic re-read

This book comes with a built-in audience...women, pilots, lovers of Africa, loners...and, above all, those who love the English language and how descriptive it can be.

This is NOT a memoir; more a series of vignettes that Markham put together from her memory which she announces from the beginning that is extremely hard to recover accurately. Reprinted when she was in her 80s, it became a best seller. The original printing was received well, but not nearly so well as when she was rediscovered. It didn't help that many believe she was not the "real" author; she never wrote anything else that came close to the beautiful prose exhibited here.

Praised by Hemingway, who evidently envied her writing skills, fame faded away from this woman whose personality was forbidding (except for her lovers, one presumes) and enigmatic. Not one word about her somewhat unconventional life is present in this volume, but her deep and abiding love for Africa is evident throughout. Worth reading for its use of language and evocative images, don't look for her to reveal the private details of a life that must have been fascinating.

Corageous, respectful, unique

The first chapters somehow missed the mark with me. But I am so,so glad I kept reading. It is hard to find the right words to describe this book and the person who wrote. She grew up in the early years of the 29th century hunting barefoot in East Africa with her dog, her spear and Murani men. The rest of her life was no less unconventional. At 17 she set out on her own.

Beryl Markham became a recognized horse trainer and bush pilot in the early days of aviation. It is an odd memoir in that there is no mention of her mother, brother, son or husbands yet the story seemed complete without them.

It is easy to see why Hemingway praised her writing. It is clean, eloquent and devoid of sentimentality.

1940's style memoir of a fascinating woman.

Reads in the 1940 style prose that fits the memoir. It is a well done work that if your first taste of Beryl Markham you will become interested in her life. However, would recommend first reading other works (i.e. Straight on Until Morning and Circling the Sun) on Markham before reading her own memoir. It will make this much more interesting.

A must-read to improve the results of your food!

Having relied on Cooks Illustrated recommendations for many of my favourite kitchen tools, buying this book was a no brainer. Needless to say I had high expectations going in, and this book did not disappoint.

I'm an avid cook, and while I've had great success with certain types of food, I've been frustrated by inconsistent results in others. (I can't seem to get a consistently moist pot-roast -- reason: my cooking temperature was probably too high; wrong cut of meat + oven braising is better than stovetop since it heats more evenly in more directions)

The Science of Good Cooking breaks down why food cooks a certain way, and which techniques are best for what purpose. The book is organized into 50 concepts with recipes reinforcing each concept. There's a section called "why this works" following each recipe, which breaks down the science behind each step -- for instance why use a certain type of marinade, cooking technique, take extra steps, etc to achieve a desired outcome. It's nice that it's not just a list of recipes.

Experiments back each concept. Meats were weighed, measured, smashed to determine tenderness, and moisture loss. They came up with a range of ideal resting times for various meats based on actually measuring the amount of juices lost at various times, and they sent food to the science lab to analyze their structure. They even stuck bones on mashed potatoes to test out whether keeping bones on makes food taste better. This book debunked some assumptions I had (acid does not actually make food more tender), and helped me understand other ones better - why salt directly applied on skin makes it more crispy, but if you brined the skin you'd get a different outcome. I also learned that the direction you cut your onion affects its taste - obvious in retrospect, but I never thought about that!

I was disappointed I couldn't see a table of contents before purchase, so here are the 50 concepts you will find within the book -

The only thing I would have loved was a trouble shooting / Q&A section - e.g. How do you keep meat from cooling too much when you rest it?

Overall a great book if you want to improve your cooking technique, and also if you just want to learn more about why things behave the way they do!

Update: Looks like "Look inside" is now available for this book so there's finally a table of contents! :) Since I've been cooking with the new concepts in mind, I'm happy with how my meat dishes (especially the stews) are turning out. I also tried using vodka instead of water to make pie crust (with the tip of putting a heated pan under the pie pan) and the pie crust turned out flaky and delicious as promised.

Full of information, good variety of recipes, great for when you have time to make it taste superb

I still consider myself an advanced beginner when it comes to cooking so I LOVE cookbooks like this where they explain WHY recipes are they way they are. Things I liked about this book:

1. They have 50 cooking concepts that are discussed in detail. These range from "A covered pot doesn't need water" to "starch helps cheese melt nicely." They tell you the concept, then explain the science behind it. Often the explanation comes with illustrations, tables and details of the experiments they did in the test kitchen. There were a lot of things I had never read/heard of before like how salt added to meat makes it more juicy, but salt added to vegetables takes the water out.
2. The book is brimming with tips, tricks and information. The index has information on how to pick out kitchen equipment like knives, pots and pans and tools; emergency ingredient substitutions are also given. The front of the book goes over basics like meat temperatures that indicate doneness, definitions of common cooking terms. (I now know what to do if a recipe calls for chiffonading herbs!)
3. The book has lots of recipes and a good variety of types. It really has a little bit of everything.
4. The book is very well put together. The pages are glossy, the binding is tight. Feels like it can withstand years of being used.

Things I didn't like:

1. The biggest pet peeve I have with this something many people will NOT have to worry about. I happen to have the The Cook's Illustrated Cookbook: 2,000 Recipes from 20 Years of America's Most Trusted Cooking Magazine and many (if not all) the recipes are the same. I randomly looked up about ten recipes and they were all duplicates. Some had more explanations on why they work, or might offer more variations, but so far I haven't found a single recipe that is not a duplicate. (I have not looked at every single recipe though, as I said, I just looked up a few in different categories.) That said, you would think I would be majorly upset but I'm not. There are so many tips and explanations in this book not found in the other one that I don't think it's a total loss. I just want to mention this in case you have the other book that there are no new recipes, but much new information.

2. There are no pictures of the recipes, but if you're familiar with Cooks Illustrated, this will not be new to you. Many of my "gourmet" cookbooks have no photos so this is a small thing. I just mention it in case there are people out there who are very visual and need photos.

3. The recipes are delicious but not simple. Cooking plain white rice has many additional steps. Basic Scrambled eggs is not basic; you've got to add two additional yolks and use half-and-half. That said, they give you a chart for "formula for perfect scrambled eggs" which I really liked.

With the three things I disliked, I still gave this 5 stars because I felt like people wouldn't really have my first problem, the second problem is trivial, and the third, well, this is a cookbook for when you want taste to matter. Maybe not for Monday night when you have less than thirty minutes to throw something together for the family, but definitely for Saturday night when the in-laws are in town and you want them to be blown away.

A Mad Scientist

Yes, I have a BS in food technology with a lot of chemistry, biochemistry, bacteriology, etc. background. So I found this book another interesting treatise on food science. Personally, I love it. My wife, with a BS in elementary education, 2 sons with accounting and finance degrees, and a mechanical engineering daughter, I am probably the only one in the family to love this book. If you want to cook, and want to know WHY things happen during the cooking process, this is a great book. The recipes in each section emphasize each subject.
If you like Alton Brown, Shirley Corriher, etc., then this book is for you.
If you watch America's Test Kitchen or Cook's Country on TV, and like the science section, buy the book. To me, the recipes may be redundant (400 recipes for 50 sections).
This is a great book if you want to take "Food Science 101" at home. Read each section carefully, then maybe try a suggested recipe to understand the chapter subject. If you want to know HOW, don't buy the book, but if you want to know WHY, place your order now.
But for me, at age 74, it is a great refresher course. It is definately a FIVE if this type of book interests you.
With 50 sections, you could do one a week and take a two week sabatical.

An exciting debut series with plenty of atmosphere, surprises and horror!

Lynda O’Rourke had us all gripped with her début, DRUG, the shocks and suspense, the fear and horror. And, she has done it again with DWELL. After cutting it fine and managing to escape the hospital, Cruor Pharma, Kassidy is now on the run from the demonic staff and the police helping to cover up what is happening there. It is certainly not a drug trial in the ‘normal’ sense that she believed she was volunteering for. Now with her veins filling up with the thick, black VA20, her body has survived and is the perfect host for a demon to ‘dwell’. But, Kassidy is also concerned about what will happen once her whole body is full of the stuff.

Max’s brother, Robert, had previously had the VA10 drug and had survived. The Bishop’s house was the last place they knew he was going to and Max was desperate to see his brother again. And so, Kassidy, Max, Raven and Jude aim to visit the Bishop’s house to find out if Robert had made it there, and where else he may have left for.

On their journey they stop off at, Kassidy’s friend, Heather’s flat to clean up. During which there are some scary scenes with plenty of dark horror. One scene happens when Kassidy is in the shower, and although her friends hear the sounds of a struggle, there is nothing else out of place to convince them it was anything paranormal. Kassidy questions what she has experienced but her gut still tells her it was real. The horror scenes are shocking and can make you a little jumpy due to their detailed descriptions that make them realistic, and making it a perfect read for this genre. The reader will certainly be on full alert reading Dwell.

The gang all share a little hope that being at the Bishop’s house, around holiness, will keep out the demons. However, things are not always as they seem. And, staying with the Bishop and Mrs. Gables was a little awkward and eerie. There was a dark atmosphere from the large, quiet but old home they lived in. It was unclear whether Mrs. Gables wanted them to leave or stay. She doesn’t seem too pleased of their arrival. And what is it with keeping the fires constantly lit in every room? Not to mention the amount of birds they have getting stuck in the chimneys, and the noise from the derelict third floor. The atmosphere of the house and of the dialogue between the characters is brilliant for creating the tension and fear of the reader.

Aside from the horror, Dwell is also quite an emotional part of the gang’s ordeal. Kassidy is frustrated, angry, scared and exhausted from everything they have all been through, what she has witnessed and what her mind is trying to understand about it all. Lynda O’Rourke‘s language and description is so powerful and moving at this point that the reader feels everything that Kassidy does as she reflects on what has happened to her and her friends. We feel her despair as well as her strength.

(Whilst her friends are taking some time to rest)“… Why couldn’t I rid myself of these awful images that were screwing up my head? Why wouldn’t my brain just shut down and give me some peace? I could feel myself filling with anger – frustration. I just wanted to sleep. I wanted to escape my own mind and sleep was the only place I could forget. I kicked out at the chair. It topple over – clattering onto the bare floorboards. I didn’t care if I woke the others. Why should they sleep so peacefully? I was fired up. Ready for a fight. I wanted to hit someone – anyone. I wanted to vent my anger. Make them feel the pain I was suffering – hurt them like I was hurting – spill their blood like mine had. I grabbed large clumps of my hair in both fists and yanked down hard, gritting my teeth. I wanted to scream at the top of my voice – yell so hard – go on some mad frenzy – smashing everything up that I came across. I wanted everyone to feel my pain.”

This also shows that sometimes the power of writing in first person is very strong. When the reader knows exactly what is racing through the characters minds it makes it so much easier to connect with and understand them. It brings out more realism and the reader can place themselves in the story, making the danger, the emotions and the action so much more intense. Lynda O’Rourke has used this brilliantly.

Kassidy hasn’t had a perfect life, with her dad being an alcoholic, now this, and so she reaches the point where she is beginning to feel completely broken. She doesn’t know what to do, she just needs someone, some comfort. There is a ‘moment’ between her and Jude as Jude’s character begins to show his more serious, sincere and caring side. However, Kassidy doesn’t really know what she is doing, and it is over before anything serious has begun. I loved this scene. It shows perfectly how Kassidy’s character is flawed, giving in with a moment of weakness. It is something that many of us can relate to or at least understand, making her more believable. It was also great to see the different side of Jude and see his character and his relationship with the others develop.

But, what of Doctor Ben Fletcher? He’s a host to an evil demon, yet he did help Kassidy to escape. Her true feelings, I feel, lie with him. But how can she possibly be anywhere near him? She knows that the true human person is still present inside of him, but the demon could change all of that. Is there still a part of her that wants to see him again?

“…If Ben… had no control over his actions or couldn’t remember the things he did, then could I really blame him for what had happened to me?”

Their hope of survival lies with Doctor Langstone, a demon, yet a doctor who was against the drug trials at Cruor Pharma and left because of them. Maybe he can offer answers, or will be drawn to the group from his demon side. Either way, there will be plenty more horror and surprises. I cannot wait to read book 3, Demon!!

You don't know who is good or evil

Another sensational read by Linda O'Rourke. This follow up to her debut book Drug blew me away. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Every heart pounding page-turning moment I was filled with dread and anxiety not knowing what was going to happen. I'm not sure where she got this gift of writing but she really truly is blessed. Kassidy and her friends are getting deep into this crazy demon world. You don't know who is good or evil. No one can be trusted. I can't wait for Demon. I am officially hooked on this talented author!

This book is as good as the first one, if not better. I started the book this morning and couldn't stop til the end. Well done I love this series and can't wait till the next one. If you have not read the first book in this series. I highly recommend that you do. I promise you will not be sorry. I wish I could tell you what was in the book, but that is for you to find out. In this alternately heart-wrenching and uplifting story, Jura's daughter, Golabek, a pianist, and writer Cohen trace the six years Jura spent in London, where she found surrogate families in the 31 other young refugees at the Willesden Lane hostel, and in the working-class British women at the East End garment factory that employed her. The authors beautifully capture Jura's passion for music and her determination to realize her dream of becoming a concert pianist. Her quest to win a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music seems to inject hope into everyone with whom she comes into contact: the hostel owner provides her with a piano and practice time, her housemates band together to drill her on technique and theory, and a co-worker makes her an audition outfit. Yet this is no Babes in Arms. Jura's struggle to hold herself together on the trip to England and as she makes a life for herself without the guidance of her beloved mother is as bleak as her musical successes are joyful. And the depictions of V-Day are especially vivid: rather than celebrate with the masses, Jura retreats to the hostel. Mona Golabek is an internationally acclaimed concert pianist, the host of the popular syndicated classical music radio show, "The Romantic Hours," and Grammy-nominated recording artist. With her sister, Rene Golabek Kaye, she has performed at the Hollywood Bowl, Kennedy Center, and London's Festival Hall. Ms. Golabek lives in Los Angeles.

Lee Cohen is a journalist, screenwriter, and poet. He lives in Los Angeles.

More appropriate for teenagers than adults

While the book is a moving tribute to Ms. Golabek's mother's dedication and tenacity under extraordinarily difficult circumstances, as a reader of history, I found the book to be disappointing, a chronological series of anecdotes about the horrible treatment of her mother's family in Vienna under the Nazis, the KinderTransport program and her mother's and her mother's fellow KinderTransporters' experiences as teenage refugees in England during World War II.

The book is clearly titled as a "memoir," so perhaps I should have expected the book to be exactly what it was, but I thought the level of writing and storytelling in the book, even as a memoir, were appropriate for sixth to twelfth graders, and not adults. Since Ms. Golabek spends a lot of time educating children about the Holocaust through her foundation, perhaps this book was written for a school age readership and I highly recommend the book for this purpose.

Finally, I attended a performance of Ms. Golabek's "The Pianist of Willesden Lane" at the Berkeley Repertory Theater and it was a real tour de force. I highly recommend the play, both for Ms. Golabek's piano virtuosity and thecplay's moving and emotional tribute to Ms. Golabek's mother.

Fantastic Narration of a WWII Survival Story

I met Mona in a coffeeshop. What a sweet lady! We talked for some time about how young people (my age 22 and younger) are seeing a trend of pop culture references that make light of the Holocaust and WWII. There are few survivors left, and someone needs to tell the stories the way they should be told, the way we should remember. Mona & Lee Cohen do exactly that in this book.

They tell the heartfelt story of their mother Lisa Jura, based entirely on true stories and real people. Jura's family sent her to England as a young child on the Kindertransport, in hopes that she could use her brilliant talent as a pianist to make a life for herself. She had to leave her parents, sisters, friends, and neighbors behind. But despite her fears, loneliness, and confusion (why would the Nazis do this?), Lisa Jura always found a way to be thankful, polite, and appreciative of the good things in life.

This is more than just a survival story; it's a story about how she and the other Jewish children refugees found ways to make their lives rich and meaningful in times when life didn't seem to make sense.

This is a quick read -- in one sitting in case you get addicted, and can't put it down! -- and very uplifting. It reminds you to be thankful for what you've got, and not brood on what could have or would have been. It is not a depressing book, but it will bring tears to your eyes!

A Tale Of Inspiration and Survival

Lisa Jura is a talented 14 year old living in Vienna when Hitler comes to power and invaded Austria. Her father is a simple tailor and the family lived in a working class ghetto of Vienna. They are not rich. Lisa is a talented and promising pianist who studies piano with a prominent teacher in this city of music. It is Lisa's dream to play a concert in the much loved Vienna State Opera House. The first consequence of the Nuremberg laws which discriminated harshly against the Jews was that her much loved Music professor, Dr. Isseles could no longer teach her piano. Non-Jews could no longer teach Jewish students. It was with great regret that professor Isseles has to dismiss his promising student, Lisa. Lisa returns home downtrodden. The whole neighborhood was inspired by Lisa's gift and was hopeful that she would arise from the ghetto and make something of herself. Her music loving mother was her inspiration and constant encourager. After crystalnacht, when her father was beaten, forced to undress to the waist and ordered to scrub the street, Lisa's mother recognized the danger for her family. A seat on the Kindertransport became available and was offered to the family. Rosie, who was 18 was too old. Lisa at 14 qualified and her mother sent her. With tears and sadness Lisa left her family with a small suitcase which contained a photo of her famiily and a sparkling evening bag that belonged to her grandmother. She removed the tiny gold necklace with the piano charm that she always wore and put it around the neck of her 11 year old sister, Sonia. Lisa was placed in the country home of a wealthy military officer and his much younger wife. Lisa was a servant in the house and the house did not have a piano. After 6 months of loneliness and isolation in the country, she ran away to the Jewish agency in London which then placed her in an orphanage for these children run by a Viennese matron who also fled Austria. She had camaraderie among the other children most of whom were from Germany or Austria. They all spoke German. However, the matron, Mrs. Cohen, an educated and previously wealthy Viennese matron required that only English be spoken so that the children became fluent in English, the tongue of their adopted land. Ten thousand Jewish children were saved by the English. Many of them opened their homes to these children. Not all of the homes were Jewish. The orphanage had a piano and Lisa played it beautifully and regularly. All the residents of the house were entertained by her music. She worked as a seamstress in a clothing factory during the day to earn money for her food and lodging. She was allowed to keep 25% of her earnings for personal expenses. She tried to find ways to save her family. Sonia needed a sponser and Lisa searched for one everywhere. Life was becoming desperate for Lisa's family and Sonia. Finally, she asked a quaker widow who had been charitable when a bomb damaged the orphanage and Lisa needed a place to sleep. The widow could not keep Sonia, but she found another quaker family in the country who could. Sonia was on the last train of the kindertransport before England declared war on Germany and the trains stopped running. Sonia was allowed to study in the morning and work only in the afternoon. She was lucky as most had to work all day. Mrs. Cohen recognized Lisa's talent and encouraged her to apply to the prestigious Royal Academy of Music. Lisa won a spot and a scholarship. She attended the academy, but worked mornings at the factory making supplies for the army. She sewed heavy fabric into back packs etc. Her piano teacher noticing the stress on her fingers arranged for her to have a job playing the piano in the evenings at local club where there was drinking and dancing. Lisa was an attractive girl with red hair, and all the soldiers wanted to buy her drinks and flirt with her. She only saw her sister once every 6 months because the train tickets from the countryside were expensive and Sonia could not leave her work or school very often. They lost contact with their married sister,Rosie and their parents. No one in the orphanage had contact with their parents. The Jewish agency heard the rumors about the death camps, the deportations, and the mass killings. No one wanted to believe it. The stories were so horrific that they were unblievable. Lisa graduated from the music school and the school financed her debut recital. It was heavily attended. One attendee was a French Jewish soldier,Michael Golabek, who had heard her play in the club and was impressed by her talent. After the war, Sonia and Lisa were reunited with their sister Rosie who was now wearing the chain with the piano charm. Rosie her husband Leo, and their four year old daughter, Esther survived by escaping from France into Switzerland. They all emigrated to the U.S. where Lisa again met up with Michael Golabek. Lisa and Michael married. All three sisters and their spouses moved to California. Lisa's parents were deported to Lodz and then Auschwitz where they died. Lisa's daughters and granddaughters are all talented pianists. Her daughter, Mona Golebek one of the authors is an internationally acclaimed concert pianist, the host of a classical music radio show and grammy nominated recording artist. This story was a page turner. I could not put it down. However, it was sentimental. The characters lacked dimension. They were usually good people with few negative qualities. Because of that they were not realistic. They all seemed to be kind and good, tolerant and understanding of each other. For teenagers they had relatively few issues. All but one lost their whole family. One boy had a mother who survived. These children spent their teen years in the children's home and grew to adulthood there.
