Our inability to place the man intellectually, and find a type and reason for his intellectual state, comes from this: that the revolt he represents is not an intellectual revolt. Ideas are not at the bottom of it. It is a revolt from drudgery. It is the revolt of laziness. There is no intellectual coherence in his talk, but merely pathological coherence. Can the insulting jumble of ignorance and effrontery, of scientific phrase and French paraphrase, of slang and inspired adjective, which he puts forward with the pretence that it represents thought, be regarded, from any possible point of view, as a philosophy, or a system, or a belief? Is it individualism of any statable kind? Do the thoughts and phrases which float about in it have a meaning which bears any relation to the meaning they bear in the language of thinkers? Certainly not. Does all the patriotic talk, the talk about the United States and its future, have any significance as patriotism? Does it poetically represent the state of feeling of any class of American citizens towards their country? Or would...

"Let us remember the world upon which the young Emerson's eyes opened. The South was a plantation. The North crooked the hinges of the knee where thrift might follow fawning. It was the era of Martin Chuzzlewit, a malicious caricature,--founded on fact. This time of humiliation, when there was no free speech, no literature, little manliness, no reality, no simplicity, no accomplishment, was the era of American brag. We flattered the foreigner and we boasted of ourselves. We were over-sensitive, insolent, and cringing."

There was an attempt to revive the memory of John Jay Chapman in the 1960s- in vain. He pulled some astounding stunts in his life, including, scandalously, burning off his own hand. He also wrote some brilliant essays. The essay on Whitman is just as incisive as that on Emerson, although the key is the same, the tempo is faster-

"The attraction exercised by his writings is due to their flashes of reality. Of course the man was a poseur, a most horrid mountebank and ego-maniac. His tawdry scraps of misused idea, of literary smartness, of dog-eared and greasy reminiscence, repel us. The world of men remained for him as his audience, and he did to civilized society the continuous compliment of an insane self-consciousness in its presence."

The note on Romeo, the translations from Dante and Michelangelo, and the essays on some idols of his own age, Robert Browning and Robert Louis Stevenson, are all fine in their way, but the two American essays are the ones that seem most relevant.

Chapman was most impressed by Emerson

I have the book The Romance of Individualism in Emerson & Nietzsche (Series In Continental Thought) by David Mikics, so it is not surprising for me to see Emerson praised for trying to inspire some individual souls in a society with enough gravity to make morality a mask that inflicts discomfort. Emerson wrote of the young that were dedicated to "so much unbalanced intellectuality" and Chapman remembers Emerson for fighting Daniel Webster, calling Webster a man of the past and not a man of faith and hope. I am familiar with John Jay Chapman as a reviewer and the publisher of The Political Nursery, which was featured in the January/February 2001 issue of Harvard Magazine with a photo of the motto: The object of the Nursery is to tell the truth: Let break what must break, we shall soon see the way.

Barry J. Babin has authored over 70 research publications in some of the most prestigious research periodicals, including the JOURNAL OF MARKETING, THE JOURNAL OF CONSUMER RESEARCH, THE JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH, THE JOURNAL OF RETAILING, PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORTS, PSYCHOLOGY AND MARKETING, and THE JOURNAL OF THE ACADEMY OF MARKETING SCIENCE, among others. Babin is currently Max P. Watson, Jr., Professor of Business and chair of the department of marketing and analysis at Louisiana Tech University. He has won numerous honors for his research, including the Louis K. Brandt Faculty Research Award from the University of Southern Mississippi (on three occasions), the 1996 Society for Marketing Advances (SMA) Steven J. Shaw Award, the 1997 Omerre Deserres Award for Outstanding Contributions to Retail and Service Environment Research, and the Academy of Marketing Science's Harold W. Berkman Distinguished Service Award. He is a former president of the Academy of Marketing Sciences and the Society of Marketing Advances, and he currently serves the marketing editor for the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH. Babin's research focuses on the effect of the service environment in creating value for employees and customers. His expertise is in building and understanding value that leads to long-lasting, mutually beneficial relationships with employees and customers. His primary teaching specialties involve consumers and service quality, marketing research, and creative problem solving. A frequent international lecturer, he has presented in Australia, South Korea, France, Germany, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Dr. Eric Harris is Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Management and Marketing at Pittsburg State University in Kansas. He holds BBA and MBA degrees from Pittsburg State University and a PhD from Oklahoma State University. Dr. Harris's professional and consulting experiences include work in sales management, healthcare marketing, and customer satisfaction assessment. He is actively engaged in research and has been published in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, the Journal of Advertising, Psychology and Marketing, the Journal of Business Research, the Journal of Business and Psychology, the Journal of Personal Selling & Sales Management, and others. Dr. Harris also serves on the editorial review boards for the Journal of Business Research, the Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice, the Journal of Services Marketing, and Services Marketing Quarterly. He is Consulting Editor for the Journal of Managerial Issues and with Dr. Babin has coauthored a chapter in the Wiley International Encyclopedia of Marketing. I had not previously know where the expression, "Shank's Mare" originated.
A fun read. Hard to put it down.

It's OK.

I have only just started reading this book and I'm haveing alot of trouble finding the houmor in the book. And also I can't really tell what is going on in the story. The plot seems to be choppy and I can't get a mental picture as to what is going on half the time. But I can not bash the book untill I'm done reading it. I hope things start to smooth out the more I read it and get a feel for the style of the book.

Good silly fun

This book is over 200 years old and still popular. There's a good reason for that.

It captures all that people love about slapstick, and doesn't worry about toning it down for the kids. The two heros drift from town to town, bordello to bordello, and bar to bar. They're petty grifters, always trying to pull another meager scam, and always getting the worst of it in the end.

There's no real plot here, just a sequence of vignettes. They're all like enough in kind to create a rhythm, but different enough to stay entertaining. Lots of the humor is low - potty humor, not restricted just to human waste. As in some britcoms, our heroes suddenly appear in their underwear time and again - or out of it, or next to it, or looking up into a tree at it. The real fun is in their silly pranks and exaggerations, always found out in ways that make them look like total twits.

Ikku Jippensha's work is still a good read, even today. Sometimes, though, English doesn't capture the flavor of the original. The translator just shouldn't have bothered with some of the puns, and a few turns of phrase probably sounded better back when this was translated. End-notes are scanty, and there appears to be a systematic error in page number references towards the end of the notes.

None of that really interferes with a good read. Enjoy the prat-falls as much as the original readers did, 200 years ago and in Japan.

If you miss this tiny warning and proceed with renting, you will most likely receive a used book without a working access code unless you happen to receive a new book for your rental. If you receive a used book for your rental but need the access code, you will need to either keep the rental and buy an access code from Pearson or another source or return the rental and buy a new book with an access code. If you choose to return the rental, your money will be tied up until Rent U receives the returned textbook then refunds your rental fee. Either way, you will need to allow sufficient time to source and obtain your access code. It's alive!

I love this Biology book. I first studied biology nearly twenty-five years ago with a huge and lovely biology book written by an author whose name unfortunately escapes me. I loved that book, and have always judged future biology texts against that one; this one measures up well against my memory of that text.
The fourth edition of `Biology: Concepts & Connections' is an excellent, thorough introduction to the science of biology. It is used at the community college where I tutor (biology and other sciences) for general education and nursing students. The book is divided into seven major sections: The Life of a Cell; Cellular Reproduction and Genetics; Concepts of Evolution; Biological Diversity; Animals; Plants; and finally, general Ecology.
After an interesting introduction, which talks about discovery-based science in addition to theoretical/hypothesis science with interesting examples (the Australian Flying Fox, flies that mimic spiders), the first unit on the Life of the Cell looks at basic structure and chemistry of cells. Even though this text deals with chemistry, a chemistry background is not required. Care is taken from the outset to relate the biology tasks to `everyday life', things that people know and care about - there is a look at athletic performance with slow-twitch and fast-twitch muscles, light in the lives of plants, and even look at the possibility of extraterrestrial life.
The unit on Cellular Reproduction and Genetics introduces a hot topic in general conversation today, including discussions of medicine and law in addition to the basic theory, with some of the latest information included. The units on Concepts of Evolution and Biological Diversity include new features such as discussion on mitochondrial DNA comparison and the use of molecular clocks to date divergence in evolutionary paths. Topics such as increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics are discussed, and the interesting evolutionary situation of Australia, separated from the major landmasses of the rest of the world, shows an interesting side-show on biological diversity.
The unit on Animals will be the most interesting for many, and the diversity here includes discussions from geckos to bears to human traits shared with and different from other animals. Particularly for our nursing students, the sections on respiration (anaerobic and aerobic), broken bones, immune systems, blood-cell diseases and the like really drive home the need for a basic understanding of biology.
The units on Plants and Ecology draw in the larger mass of living things sharing our planet, work to show how the environment operates from the standpoint of individual plants to entire ecosystems. Interesting current topics such as organic farming, population ecology, endangered species and global warming drive home the importance of biology.
The book is very colourful, both in text copy and in pictures. Headers reinforce the broader topics while modules give key concepts within each broad topic. Diagrams are arranged with numbered steps to help understanding, and there are frequent references to website and CD-ROM additions. Key questions are asked at each conceptual point. The `behind the scenes' information helps reinforce the concepts both with the hot topics involved in biological issues today, as well as the personalities driving the science in key areas. Each chapter has a summary of key points, concept questions and multiple-choice questions for test preparation. There are well over 100 `Connection' Modules and `Talking about Science' Modules. Each of the 38 chapters has an interesting, inviting essay as introduction. There are probably 200 CD-ROM and website activities to engage the students, everything from the cloning of genes in bacteria to steroid hormone action to the Honeybee waggle dance.
This is a very good book, with lots of information - it is also a flexible book, and certain portions can be omitted in a syllabus without diminishing the overall text. I find myself constantly glancing through the chapters and reading the interesting essays and connection modules between my tutoring appointments. That's the mark of a good textbook.

When the first volume of Japanese Secret Projects was published, it shone a spotlight onto many previously overlooked or almost unknown Japanese aircraft projects and it was an immediate hit with aviation enthusiasts and historians. Now, after five years of dedicated research, the next volume in the series continues the story of the secret projects of the Japanese aviation industry, focusing in particular on designs that actually progressed beyond the drawing board (whether or not they flew).

The aircraft described in Japanese Secret Projects Volume 2 include significant pre-war types such as the Mitsubishi 1MT1N Torpedo Carrier and the record-breaking Gasuden Koken-Ki, as well as projects for long range bombers and advanced fighters to replace the increasingly antiquated designs in service as the war progressed. Later, as Japan’s situation became increasingly desperate, the concept of suicide missions came to the fore and existing aircraft designs were modified to deliver the maximum destruction by “special attack” units. Later still, when invasion looked inevitable, purpose-built suicide aircraft, capable of being assembled by semi-skilled labor and flown by novice pilots, were developed as part of the anti-invasion plan Operation Ketsugo.

Japanese Secret Projects Volume 2 also examines the influence of German wartime aircraft, such as the proposed Hitachi He-Type Heavy Bomber, based on the Heinkel He-177 and looking beyond just aircraft designs, the Ku-Go directed energy weapon project and Japan’s nuclear weapons programs are also described.

About the Author
Edwin M. Dwyer has studied military technology for more than 20 years, concentrating on weaponry from 1914 to 1960. In 1999, he created the Hikoki:1946 website, highlighting Japanese experimental aircraft. He is currently serving in the United States Civil Air Patrol with the rank of Master Sergeant.

Another Great Reference Source on Japanese WW2 Aviation

After releasing his first volume of Japanese Secret Projects, author Edwin Dyer then set about more research on the subject of Japanese experimental aircraft. After five years his second volume yields yet more very interesting information on the topic.

Additionally this second volume has a revised theme and layout. In Volume One, the author made use of very high quality artwork of the various subjects in that book using a number of renowned aviation artists; depicting the aircraft in actual colour schemes of Japanese units particularly those of the home defence air units. In this second volume the author makes use of line diagrams, colour profiles and numerous photos of the actual aircraft that he has painstakingly gathered.

This second volume continues to examine the various experimental aircraft of both the IJA and IJN air forces during the years 1922-1945 and looks at those aircraft built by: Aichi, Hitachi, Kawanishi, Kawasaki, Kujishu, Mitsubishi and Nakajima as well as both the IJA and IJN nuclear weapons programmes.

I enjoyed this book as it follows on from the first volume with more information that has been sourced by the author during his research into this topic over time.

In summary a very well researched and written book, rich in data and visual graphics to assist in 'seeing' what some of these aircraft were like-or intended to be like. The author delivers a very accurate and detailed account of this subject. This second volume, supplemented by the first volume, would be very valuable resources for fans of Japanese WW2 military aviation as well as model kit enthusiasts as there are a number of kits of these type of of aircraft on the market today. Well done, Edwin Dyer!

Disappointing when compared to Volume One

The scope of author Edwin Dyer's second volume on experimental Japanese aircraft has been broadened to include programs dating back to 1922. I'm assuming this was done to allow for creation of a book similar in size to the first volume. Mr. Dyer also states in the preface that he sought to reduce the number of conjectural drawings in favor of more photographs.

The result of this is a work that is tangential to the objective of the original volume/ Personally, I have little interest in aircraft that are more accurately referred to as post-WW! designs. I also have an issue with his too a great a reliance on photographs of German designs used as the basis for Japanese aircraft. In such cases where no photo of the Japanese craft could be found, I would rather he had maintained the approach of providing artwork.
