Much better books out there on vernacular buildings

May's book is basically a slick repackaging of stock images of vernacular buildings worldwide complete with the standard architect's dreary renderings of each structure. The structure and the narrative of the book is not very interesting as it is organized along the lines of an identification handbook. Also, Earthship Reynold's is a licensed architect and his buildings are largely contrived and theory-laden, lacking the most basic premises of what a vernacular building or process is. Why Reynold's work is even in this book is beyond comprehension as his work should not be seen in the same light.

Save your money for Rudofsky's classic Architecture without Architects or Oliver's Dwellings: The Vernacular House Worldwide.

Little pink indlus for you and me

Seems like it's been a while since a grownup nonfiction book has crossed my path that I couldn't put down, had to keep turning the pages because it was just so daggone fascinating.

I call these books Your Neighborhood Librarian's Fetish Books, because I go through them so obsessively. The one about the little girl beauty pageants; Hair Wars; the book of Powwow attire. Yum.

So here's a new one, and what is it about? Vernacular architecture. The way people have built their houses and service structures all over the world and throughout history, when building is entirely driven by materials, function, and comfort. How did the ancient Scots cope with bitter winds and lack of lumber? What's the best way to stack hay in Eastern Europe? How exactly is a yurt put together?

And oh, what a luxurious wealth of types of structures! Haida plank houses, Yanomamo compounds, indlus, igloos, tipis and toleks. Bottle buildings, log cabins, cob houses, cave dwellings. With plan drawings, elevations, cross sections, and some color pictures.

Makes you want to go out in the woods, mix up some mud, cut some saplings, and make yourself a little indlu of your own.

A great book from a great professor.

After taking some classes from Dr. Steve Feller, I got interested in holograms. Dr. Feller does offer a class about Holography, but I could not take it due to class scheduling conflict. That being said after reading the book I was very surprised to see how simple it is to make a rudimentary hologram using standard camera film. At the end of this semester, I am going to try my hand at making one. I would encourage anyone who had an interested in learning how these are made to read this book.

Too bad it is hard to read quickly

While I am interested in the subject matter as a practitioner and overall enthusiast into ethnographical studies of Afro-Caribbean religions, what I hate about these type of books is the hard to read language. Even as a college graduate and professional, I found myself re-reading sentences just to make sure I understood what was being said. Is it that you have to be purposely obtuse to be considered a worthy academic when documenting these studies? Well that might be but you lose out on a wider audience that might also be interested in your work.

I can't yet say what I think about the book as I am barely getting to page 35 (I will rate it properly later but so far I like the content and where it seems to be heading). The language does not make for an easy read. Also had to bone up on Hegelian Logic and Philosophy.

So far my favorite phrase is "...in favor of a multiplicity of tenebrous visceral apprehension." Really?

Reveals more than any other book on Palo
By Mystical Understanding
The writing is at times overly complicated, as the author has made an academic project of his journey into Palo. Hegelian and Marxist concepts are used as means of interpreting the worldview of Palo. This conceptualizing can occasionally feel forced or irrelevant to the subject matter at hand, however there are some truly sublime insights here, on both Palo and life in general.

A worthwhile read if you would like to know more of the day to day life of a Palero in Cuba.

I found the book interesting and full of imformation regarding this religion. It gives an insider's view to those of us on the outside. I would recommend it to those persons interested in Afro Caribbean religions and culture.

About the Author

W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was an English novelist and playwright. Maugham was famous as a dramatist before he was known for his novels and short stories. His clarity of style, the perfection of his form, and the subtlety of his thought, thinly veiled by a worldly cynicism made him an international figure. Among his novels are Of Human Bondage, The Moon and Sixpence, and The Razor's Edge.

One gem and five lumps of coal

"Orientations" may not be Maugham's first book of stories but it is very early and he had definitely not found his voice as a writer. There are five very bad stories and one excellent one. I hate to say this, as I am a serious fan of Maugham, based on his later novels, such as "Of Human Bondage and "Moon and Sixpence," his Ashenden stories and his essays in "The Vagrant Mood." I read Ted Morgan's biography and I just downloaded the rest of his novels and essays, which I'm eager to read.
But "Orientations" can only be recommended to completists and scholars. The five bad stories appear to have been written by an adolescent with no knowledge of the world that grownups really live in. The long smooth sentences and the latinate vocabulary show an expensive education but can't hide the juvenile conception and mediocre execution. These are the kind of stories that secondary students would publish in their school literary magazines, if their secondary school happened to be Eton. Three of the stories are set in Spain, but it is the Spain of magazine clichés and fantastic tales, of the kind that Poe, Hawthorne and even Edith Wharton could dash off in an afternoon. Another story, about two straight-laced English art lovers in France, takes a very long time to reach the obvious conclusion. There is a story about a clerk who gets religion, but it is as flat as the protagonist and his wife, who never acquire a 3rd dimension. In one of the other stories a monk loses his faith and there is no reason for the reader to care.
The last story though, "Daisy", is the real deal, or the real Maugham. Here his mature voice sounds loud and clear. (Spoiler follows) Set in an English village, it tells the story of a lower middle class girl whose father sees that she gets more education than her stupid mother feels is proper. Disaster strikes when Daisy runs off with a soldier. She sinks as low as possible and is disowned and ostracized. That would be the end of the tale in a normal Victorian or even Edwardian story, but the God the villagers worship decides not to play by the rules they expect him to and Daisy rebounds with miraculous good fortune, while her pious family begin a slow descent towards poverty. The characters of Daisy, her father and mother come to life on the page and they become people we know. The villagers are caricatures, but they provide a Greek chorus to remind you that this story is going the wrong way. Maugham drops the authorial commentary and digressions of the other stories and his ironic sympathy shines clearly through simple yet highly polished prose. The is the Maugham who wrote the later masterpieces. The other five stories are just wrong turns that he took on the way to discovering himself as a writer. You would be wasting your time to read them. You have been warned.

Somerset Maughan at some of his best!

This is a small but really good collection of some of Maughan's short stories. Written in his special style, the stories are an interesting read, and represent great examples of his art.

Perfect for my work!

It is commonly known that fashion is big business, yet given its global significance, little has been written on the phenomenon of the fashion system. Instead, books have tended to focus on dress history, although recently the discipline has taken a more theoretical turn, with a spate of books appearing that analyze the underlying forces motivating fashion. My era, my uniform

I simply HAD to purchase this book, I mean, that'd practically me in that Jean Luis uniform for UAL. I hated wearing the kepi (hat), but then, that's because it smooshed my poofy hairstyle. Its something, the book, that needs to be in my library, to hand down to my grandchild, if I ever get one. Nicely done of other airlines as well.

For those of us who have spent thousands of hours in and traveled millions of miles on airplanes (I've been to 90 countries on six continents), take a look at Airline: Style at 30,000 Feet. It will turn that permanent scowl of jaded airline travel back into a playful grin (at least for a while).

It's fascinating to see where the various features we take for granted came from - drink carts, flight attendant uniforms, airline company logos, the color schemes of the planes themselves. Fortunately, Lovegrove took an international perspective and not just a domestic (either UK or US) one.

As I fly yet another cookie-cutter modern flight, its fun to consider what it used to be like...

Brilliant bookj! But I am biased as Keith Lovegrove lived next door to us in Bahrain in the '60's and he has included the design for the Iconic Gulf Air uniform (Beige Trouser suit with Middle Eastern style Head-scarf) that my mother (Joy Stokes) designed for the airline back in 1973.
Apart from that it is a book that captures the time, colours and spirit of Aviation before the mass herding of people on flights.
The photographs are superb and reflect the real service we used to get from airlines,compared to now.
This is a book for any true aviation enthusiast, who identifies with style and culture of the world's airlines.

Great writer however unprofessional she may be.

Pamela Ann is a great writer. However, she has no sense of time. We are ALL over the serial crap Pamela, get a clue. Above in the description you will read that book 2 will be out in May and Book 3 out in June. Book 2 came out in August and Book 3??? Who the hell knows when that one will be out. As of this review, it is still not out and there is no date to be found. THIS is exactly why I do NOT like serials. Writers should be required to complete the series BEFORE publication. That way she can get her beloved money and we can get our books on time every time. Pamela has done this with almost every series she has started. The only way to get her attention seems to be lowballing the stars. So. While I do love her writing. I am sick and tired of the serials and the disappointing lack of follow thru. So just like her Encounter trilogy, this one is still incomplete and there is no time frame for it to be completed. Even if there were, she's already blown 2 deadlines for this series and the Encounter series was supposed to have been finished by now. Guess what? That one is incomplete as well. Buyer beware.

Very interesting. My only complaint is the short length of the book. It felt like I purchased one more chapter to part one. Guess will have to wait about another year for the conclusion to the story.

I purchased this reference to use at work and have a better understanding of what was being implemented. This book was very easy to read and understand. I didn't care for the extra narrative here and there but that's the "Joes" part.

Where's the videos?

On beginning of chapter 7, it was said:
READER NOTE: You will need to view the video on how to setup your labs. The steps and hardware assumptions listed in the next few pages will already be part of your lab setup. By following those steps you can do the tutorials of this chapter.

The videos it was referring to is to show how to setup AlwaysOn Lab environment. It was one of the main reasons I've purchased this book. However, I could not find the video information. Checked publisher's website no luck. I hope I don't need to pay extra for the videos.

Don't buy only half book useful due to required video missing!

Don't buy! Can not find the video. To get past chapter 7 you must "You will need to view the video on how to setup your labs" The Videos don't seem to be on their site and no mention on where to find it. Very frustrating it keeps saying don't worry about that now we will do that when in chapter 7 we setup AOG. However before you can do chapter 7 you must have the elusive non-existent video!
