Not as Good as the 6th Edition!

I am currently teaching statistics (using a different textbook) and have been using the 6th edition of Hogg/Tanis as a reference. In my opinion, this is a pretty good text for someone who A) already has some idea of what statistics is all about and B) has a thorough understanding of calculus, which Hogg/Tanis make liberal use of. For someone who likes and understands calculus,
this is a much better introductory text than those that studiously avoid any mention of higher level mathematics. I give the 6th edition a 5-star rating based on the sections I've looked at so far.

With that said, I'm sorry to report that the 7th edition is not as good as the 6th. The authors have re-organized the material "for better logical organization", but in the process have lost some pedagogical clarity. For example, the relatively important student's t distribution has been relegated to an obscure example buried in a new chapter on the normal distribution, and the formerly excellent explanation of how this is derived is gone.

And speaking of "The Normal Distribution" chapter, do I really want all things normal relegated to a separate chapter? The pervasive use and importance of this distribution in statistics makes me think that it might be better to let the normal distribution pop up whenever it needs to be invoked, as was the case in the 6th edition. Including a "Sampling Distribution Theory" chapter (as was done in the 6th edition) makes a lot more sense than what they've done now. The new chapter on Bayesian Methods is short, and not terribly useful. Relegating this material to section 9.5 in a chapter on "Theory of Statistical Inference", as was done in the 6th edition was a much better decision.

The section on "Exploratory Data Analysis" (histograms and stemplots) has been moved from an introductory chapter (which no longer exists) to the chapter on "Continuous-Type Data". How does this make any sense? And yes, it is most definately a good idea to have an introductory chapter which talks about basic concepts and data visualizations. In the 7th edition, the mean, median, and standard deviation are first mentioned in chapter 2.

Finally, why on earth do authors think that randomly adding color to a textbook and widening the pages to allow for giant margins on every page makes a text more readable/useful when in fact just the opposite is the case? The wide margins add nothing and make the book both heavier and more unwieldy, and the blue section headings and graphs give it the feel of a junior high school algebra text. The compact elegance of the 6th edition stands in stark contrast to the large and comparatively garish 7th edition.

This revision has all the feel of something that was driven strictly by textbook marketing concerns and has nothing to do with either pedagogy or an interest in producing a excellent statistics book.

My advice? If you're looking for something for self-study or reference, get the 6th edition instead. It's better, and you can get a used copy on Amazon for next to nothing, since the lemmings have all switched to using the 7th edition and there are a lot of unwanted copies of the 6th floating around.

The nonsense of constantly producing new (and often inferior) editions of textbooks just so that publishers can make more money needs to be nipped in the bud.

a (yawn) mechanical approach to mathematics

I studied the first 8 chapters of this book instead of attending the undergraduate lecture. This was a mistake. Tanis & Hoggs present probability and statistics, an otherwise interesting topic, in the most mechanical way imaginable. There is no reference (that I can recall) to any underlying mathematical ideas or questions, nor to the problems which originially prompted Poisson, Bernoulli, Gauss, etc. to inquire about the nature of "randomness" in physical events. The authors seem to suppose that their examples demonstrate such things by proxy. This book may make a decent reference for advanced students, but should not be used to teach those seeing prob & stat for the first time... that is, unless, you want it to also be their last.

Illogic organization and non-intuitive explanation

i'm not sure whether it's useful as a reference, but it's far from being a good textbook. obviously the authors didn't care to explain anything clearly. all they wanted was to write down all the relevant formulas to finish their book. no intuition is given at all. it's a pain to read and i would recommend both instructors and students NOT to use this book.

About the Author
Bill Schubart has lived with his family in Vermont since 1947. He writes about Vermont in fiction, humor and opinion pieces. At 26, Schubart was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Vermont Arts Council and then served again at age 41. At 30, he joined the Board of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. In 1984, he became Chairman of the Vermont Folklife Center. He was educated in Morrisville Public Schools, Phillips Exeter Academy, Kenyon College and the University of Vermont. Schubart's great uncle was the renowned photographer and champion of impressionist art, Alfred Stieglitz. Schubart is fluent in French language and culture which he taught before entering communications as an entrepreneur. He writes and speaks extensively on the media and other civic issues. He has served on panels and spoken at numerous industry and media events including Book Expo, The Direct Marketing Association and The Entertainment Marketing Conference. A Courageous Book

Bill Schubart takes on the forbidden subject ... fat. And he takes it head-on from the jarring title to the cover image of a naked, disgruntled cherub who looks as if someone has just taken away his sweet bun. The characters of these fourteen fictional stories share enormous girths and are treated with equal measures of honesty (occasionally brutal), sympathy, and pathos. There's Baybie in her slanted trailer, Father Bob who can no longer reach his own penis,the girl on the train with the imaginary boy friend, even an aging coyote scavenging for fast food scraps. Be forewarned! The author will be taking you in places you've never been before (and maybe did not want to go). Schubart, a "man of girth," has been there, done that. What redeems these stories is the clarity and precision of the writing. Whether it's describing the compulsive creation of the perfect white bread cheese sandwich or the lingering aftertaste of a cinnamon roll Schubart's writing is as addictive as some of his characters' eating disorders. Writing this good makes any subject interesting. (Thank goodness, no recipes in this book!)

What Is It Like to Be Fat?

This is not light reading. In Bill Schubart's unsparing but compassionate stories, the world of people "of girth," opens up to the rest of us: the strain on the joints imposed by great weight; the beckoning, dreaded aroma of cinnamon buns and cheap pizza in an airport concourse (can you keep walking and get past that counter?); the rank odor wafting off a shy teenager in a boarding school because he's too ashamed to shower with the other boys. The loneliness and isolation; the obsessions. And every once in a while, a sweet small victory.

At times you may find yourself a reluctant reader but stay with it. You won't find this perspective anywhere else.

Dangerous Territory

This is an amazing collection of stories. Stories full of deep understanding, poignant humor, and courageous revelation. They remind us of the complex societal and personal struggles and taboos around body, food, and love that we all confront but which fat people struggle with in so many different ways.There is great sensitivity and perspective in this collection. (Notice that in the tags list one cannot find just the word "fat" but only phrases about fat.)

I walked by this giant Cottonwood tree many times. Many times I've appreciated its shade on a hot summer's day, enjoyed the leaves twirling in the sind as they return to earth in October and pondered what stories this tree could tell form one of its more than forty thousand days and nights watching over this neighborhood.

Today was different. I stopped. As I leaned against the tree the words seemed to flow out of me as I said, "Can you help me? I need some advice!" I felt the tree reach out to me, to wrap me in its branches, invite me closer and comfort me as I leaned against its steady trunk. This old and wise Cottonwood tree spoke to me with kindness and wisdom.

About the Author
Ilan Shamir lives in Colorado, among the fluttering Aspen trees and uplifting Rocky Mountains. His love of trees came early in life, when his Aunt and Uncle gave him the precious gift of a Magnolia tree for his birthday as a young child. Sharing his love of trees has been Ilans passion as he joyfully has planted over 50,000 trees and lead more than 800 planting celebrations and stories around the world. He is author of PoetTree-The Wilderness I Am, Tree Celebrations, Simple Wisdom-A Thousand Things Went Right Today!, Advice from a River, Advice from a Garden and over fifty unique nature products. Wonderful Teaching Tool and just Darn Good Lessons!

This is a lovely "very small" book, appropriate for a graduate, as a learning experience. If one is wanting to do a "family tree," this is a good preparatory or introduction. I bought it along with "The Giving Tree" as a basis for learning to give while growing. The book is small, with one line on some pages, i.e. "don't forget your roots.", Illustrations are exquisite. I highly recommend it to parents wanting to teach their children about the importance of their place in nature - not as an "environmental indoctrination," but as a tool for teaching the cyclical process of life.

I am into inspiration of all sorts and a tree-hugger since the seventies! Received this book as a gift, and was very pleased with it's message and the charming book itself :) A good little read!

About the Author
Project Director, Interviewer, and Editor Irene Reti directs the Regional History Project at the UC Santa Cruz library, where she has worked as an editor and oral historian since 1989. She holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies and a Master’s in History from UC Santa Cruz. Her novel, Kabbalah of Stone, was published in 2010. Interviewer and Editor Sarah Rabkin has taught in UC Santa Cruz’s writing program and environmental studies department for over twenty-five years. She has led an undergraduate seminar for the Program in Community and Agroecology that focuses on concepts of community and agroecology in the context of sustainability. She holds a B.A. in Biology from Harvard University and a graduate certificate in Science Communication from UCSC. Her book of essays, What I Learned at Bug Camp, was published in 2011. Interviewer Ellen Farmer has a B.A. in journalism from San Jose State University and a Master’s in public policy from the Panetta Institute at California State University, Monterey Bay with a specialization in issues in sustainable agriculture, particularly coffee growing. Farmer worked on an interim basis as marketing director for the California Certified Organic Farmers in 2006.

Inspiring stories, important history

This collection of stories of Central Coast farmers is a true gem, an uplifting and fun read. It reveals how everyday folk followed their passion to produce healthy food without chemicals, often at great financial risk, without success stories to boost them in uncertain moments, and always with tons of hard work. What you end up understanding is how they truly were pioneers even though they really didn't know it. All are humble and many laughingly say some version of "We didn't know what we were doing back then!" We owe them our gratitude for their perseverance and the incredible knowledge of the field that has resulted, making organic agriculture viable on a much larger scale and available to many more people. Not to mention all the great food that has been produced! The bigger story that comes through these oral histories is how people do make remarkable changes in the world in humble ways.

A Nourishing Read

"We in the United States are in the early throes of a revolution," writes historian Linda L. Ivey in the foreword to Cultivating a Movement, "a radical change in the way we think about food." The revolution Ivey refers to is the organic farming movement, the biggest change to American agriculture since the adoption of synthetic pesticides and herbicides after World War II. "For this development in our food industry we can thank, in large part a group of revolutionaries from the Central Coast of California."

More than two dozen of those revolutionary farmers were interviewed for this book, a project of the University of California, Santa Cruz' library. Each chapter contains the narrative from one farmer or farm family, and their stories and perspectives are radically different. Some, like Betty Van Dyke, who grew up on her Croatian-American family's orchard in Cupertino in the 1930s were born to the land; others were hippies, like Amigo Bob Cantisano, founding organizer of the Ecological Farming Conference, the West's largest and oldest sustainable agriculture conference, and a descendent of California's earliest Spanish families. Cantisano began growing food in the backyard of a commune in the late 1960s:

"That's when I started doing gardening, because it was like, starvation time, and the Diggers were giving away free food, but the only thing else that was really around was USDA surplus food, which was a bunch of crap...We didn't have any money, so we started gardening, tore up the backyard and started growing stuff, partly because I had a little experience from when I was a kid, and partly because I was just determined to do it. And then there was one other kid who had grown up and lived on a farm...So the two of us ended up being kind of the commune's gardeners."
Oral history is a rich way to gather first-person accounts of any era or place. But we ramble when we talk; interviewers need attention and sensitivity to keep interviews focused and also remain open to potentially valuable digressions. Editors must be able to separate the verbal chaff from the valuable kernels of story while preserving the distinct characteristics of voice and personality. Fortunately for Cultivating a Movement, interviewer-editors Reti and Rabkin, plus interviewer Ellen Farmer, had the deft touch necessary to yield a book of compelling and informative stories.

Like that of María Inés Catalán, the first Latina farmworker to own and operate an organic farm in California, and the first in the whole country to operate a CSA, a community-supported agriculture farm. Inés Catalán was the last of her migrant farmworker family to emigrate from Mexico, arriving two decades ago with four children in tow.

"When I went to learn how to develop a CSA, everything was in English. I went to a conference in San Francisco and we had to sleep in the car. We'd have coffee and a donut all day, because we didn't qualify for the lunches...And I would say, 'All of these things I am going through have to add up to something someday, because this can't all be in vain.' And sure enough, now we have our own CSA. We have it all...Right now we are attending a farmers market in the marketplace in Ferry Plaza [San Francisco], every Saturday. And I'm at the one in Berkeley three times a week. Those are the best markets in the whole country, in the whole country. So, just imagine. But like I say, I didn't get there with just my good looks..."

The score sheet on page 25 is not correct; the inserted correction to the score page that was included in the book was also incorrect, leading to some concern regarding a presentation based on the content of the book. The listening inventory itself was wonderful, but was confusing based on the incorrect scoring. Overall, the book was a wonderful resource in developing a leadership retreat around the subject of listening.
