PETER MASTERS is primarily a teacher, sports instructor, computer geek and writer. He has been interested in hypnosis since his early teens. To make sure he fully appreciated it and got it "right" he studied for and achieved a diploma in clinical hypnotherapy by the time he was 20. Although these days he doesn't directly use his qualification in any of his professional activities, he still tries to keep his hand in, and to stay in touch with the current literature and developments. This book is the result of both research, and of private-life exploration over the last twenty years with a variety of partners. Like most of his projects it started out as a way of finding and filling in the gaps in his own understanding. With any luck he hopes to bring an air of rational understanding and practicality to a topic which has too often been seen as akin to magic.

A new "toy" for the bedroom

I was curious to read Master's book because I have been hypnotized several times myself - though in a therapeutic setting, not a sexual setting. I haven't yet tried the techniques outlined in Master's book (though I've passed my copy off to my partner and am curious to see where things go) but I can say, speaking from my own experience of being hypnotized many times, that Masters has written an excellent guide to hypnosis for the lay person. His instructions are clear and very detailed and he often explains the reasoning behind his instructions as well so that the reader will be able to confidently adapt the techniques for individual situations. Masters even covers many of the "glitches" I personally experienced as a hypnosis subject and explains ways to avoid or minimize those situations.
Masters spends a good amount of time explaining the ethics of hypnosis. This is very important since hypnosis requires a good amount of trust and is an activity that can be abused by the unscrupulous. Despite the possibility for abuse, however, Masters makes certain to point out that hypnosis cannot force someone to do things that they wouldn't otherwise be willing to do. This is not a book for someone who wants to trick people into going to bed with them or force people to do things against their will. This is not a book of techniques to save a failing marriage. Hypnosis is about enhancing what is already there, lowering inhibitions against following one's inherent desires, helping one to gain the courage to explore one's desires more closely and so on. The author does not come across as preachy when discussing ethics and his writing style makes it interesting to read what might otherwise be a dry topic.
The reader should expect to spend a lot of time and effort implementing the ideas in this book. This is not a book one just reads and then sets down and is done with -- to get the most out of this book, one has to be willing to work on the exercises. Progress is slow as Masters wisely advises couples to take their time getting into hypnosis. In fact, Masters strongly suggests that the first session consist only of hypnotizing one's partner, checking to see if they are in a trance, bringing them back out of the trance and talking about what happened. Don't expect to be able to read this book in the afternoon and then have fully hypnotized active sex that evening unless you are already an expert hypnotist and your partner is already a proven subject with whom you have worked before. If you want an instant sex toy, get a new vibrator. This book is for people who are willing and able to put a lot of effort and time into building creative and vibrant sex play.
For those interested in using the ideas in this book professionally (such as dominatrices and other sex workers), Masters offers sufficient information and advice that is readily adapted to a professional setting including a short section about the BDSM applications of hypnosis. He also covers what sort of people should most definitely not be hypnotized and workers can use this information for screening purposes to "risk out" those for whom hypnosis play would be more dangerous than erotic.
One of the most valuable aspects of this book, in my opinion, is the copious inclusion of scripts. When I think about hypnotizing a partner, my biggest fear is that I will not know what to say or not remember the best ways to phrase ideas. Masters includes scripts for inducing hypnosis, scripts for dealing with various hypnotic situations and even suggested scripts for sexual fantasy play. Of course many of these scripts should be modified so that they more accurately fit individual situations. A really dedicated reader could even type out the scripts with appropriate modifications and print out their own personal scripts for play sessions.
I found this to be an excellent book and clearly written. I am eager to begin working with the techniques to add a little extra spice to bedroom play between my partner and myself and recommend this book to anyone who wants to add some adventure and mystery to their sex life.

Fascinating

This book takes a look at using hypnosis to "bring out the best" in your sex life. It shows you how to heighten arousal, add to roleplay, and enhance a connection with your partner, among other topics. While the topic of using hypnosis had in the past made me a bit nervous, Masters' approach to the topic is at times gentle and humorous and makes you comfortable with using it. As he points out, it is not about coercion or being forced to be hypnotized against your will. And the book's scenario examples are quite entertaining to read.

This was a very interesting read. This teaches you how to hypnotize effectively, how to measure how deeply someone is hypnotized (and how to get them deeper into trance, thusly more real sensations), tips on how to word things for the very literal minded hypnotized, and gives you ideas of what to do with hypnosis as well as some scripts for couples and if you just want to give your significant other a solo treat. It includes a variety of common scenario fetishes including mile high club, slave/master, sex on the beach, and so on. It is written very well and flows wonderfully, it was marvelously difficult to put down. It is well worth the price!
My husband and I have already been enjoying hypnosis in our relations but this book had taught us many useful things.
Hypnosis is a great way to loosen inhibitions. Though if you REALLY don't want to you still will not preform something you wouldn't want to do, so don't worry about being taken advantage of, and you still will remember your wonderful adventures. Even a perfectly happy sex life can use a little spice now and then, and this is a useful addition to your tool box. If you have any fetishes or scenarios you've always wanted to try but never had the chance, or were a little afraid/shy to, this is the answer. This even can help remove performance anxiety and make you more or less sensitive to a certain extent. All these things and more are outlined in the book. Go ahead, have some fun!

About the Author

Nicholas Copeland is a social anthropologist at Virginia Polytechnic University. His research about state power and Maya politics in Guatemala appears in the Journal of Latin American Studies and Development and Change. Nick taught at the University of Arkansas, and has conducted extensive market research inside Wal-Mart.

Christine Labuski is an anthropologist and assistant professor in Women’s and Gender Studies at Virginia Polytechnic University. Her work can be found in Feminist Studies, Archives of Sexual Behavior, and several edited volumes about the gendered body. She has also spent countless hours inside of Wal-Mart stores as a market researcher.

Great book; great teaching tool

I actually had to purchase this for an anthropology class, but once I started reading it, I had a hard time putting it down. It's a well-written, easily understandable book even for people not familiar with anthropological terms and concepts, and I think because it analyzes such a current social fact, it holds a more contemporary understanding and interest for readers. Like the title says, it's a great book--I've recommended it to several people in my acquaintance--and it's a great teaching tool as it explains anthropological concepts using a contemporary example that people interact with on a daily basis, thus meaning that students are more passionate and engaged with the material.

I was hoping for a bashing of Walmart., but no. This book is rather objective.

This looks at Walmart from something of an anthropological point of view. It's well done, a compelling read I can see how it would be useful in a class, it's succinct, readable and provoking.

The book is even-handed in describing how Walmart does in fact provide employment and low prices, but does so at the social cost of low wages and squeezing suppliers (and to suppliers' labor environment). This is not a liberal tirade at a cutthroat giant, it is a solid analysis. The book says that 10% of what China makes is bought by Walmart, and that Walmart sells 20% of the groceries sold in the USA.

Copeland credits Walmart with some ethical principles (unlike many analyses) but says that these are subverted by Walmart's commitment to ruthless pricing, ruthlessly fighting unions and their commitment to neoliberal economics. Me, I refuse to buy anything from Walmart, so you may see a bias here.

About the Authors ROBERT A. RISTINEN is Professor of Physics at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Since 1974, he has taught the Energy and Environment course several times. Ristinen is a Former Chair of the University Energy Conservation Committee and has served for many years as Chair of the university’s Radiation Safety Committee. JACK J. KRAUSHAAR is a retired Professor of Physics at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He started teaching the course on Energy and the Environment in 1971 and has taught it several times since then. He has served on the Rocky Flats Citizens Advisory Committee, on the Boulder County Energy Conservation Board, and on the University Energy Conservation Committee.
