For more than thirty years, philosopher Bernard Gert has been developing and refining his distinctive and comprehensive moral theory. His classic work, The Moral Rules: A New Rational Foundation for Morality, was first published in 1970. In 1988, Oxford published a fourth revision titled Morality: A New Justification of the Moral Rules. In this final revision, Gert has produced the fullest and most sophisticated account of this influential theoretical model. Here, he makes clear that morality is an informal system that does not provide unique answers to every moral question but does always limit the range of morally acceptable options, and so explains why some moral disagreements cannot be resolved. The importance placed on the moral ideals also makes clear that the moral rules are only one part of the moral system. A chapter that is devoted to justifying violations of the rules illustrates how the moral rules are embedded in the system and cannot be adequately understood independently of it. The chapter on reasons includes a new account of what makes one reason better than another and elucidates the complex hybrid nature of rationality.

Although Gert's moral theory is sophisticated, it is presented with a clarity that enables it to serve as an excellent introduction for beginning philosophy students, as well as fruitful reading for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. Unlike most moral theories, his account of morality is developed in sufficient detail to be useful to those interested in problems of applied ethics. This book will appeal to those engaged in business ethics, engineering ethics, environmental ethics, and especially medical ethics. In the manner of the works of Thomas Hobbes and John Stuart Mill, this book addresses the general philosophical reader and at the same time makes an important contribution to the philosophical literature.

A native Cincinnatian, like myself, moral philosopher Bernard Gert has been the only author who has defined morality in a way that is not only understandable but profoundly affecting and real. A book to be read slowly, taking notes, absorbing every notion or explanation put forward by the author. Gert died in 2011 but his writings will remain as a pillar of our understanding of what is right or wrong without resorting to supernatural beings, just looking inside ourselves for what rules and ideals will diminish suffering, pain, and evil.

A practical presentation of morality

If you are interested in reading about morality in a manner that is easy to understand and that seems to make sense, this is a good book to read. His idea that morality should be presented in a manner that the public can easily understand is admirable. Too often authors present ideas in a manner too dificult for the "lay person" to understand. This book is a pleasant read on morality.

In this book Bernard Gert takes a new approach to ethical theory, abandoning the old stance of special or unique knowledge of morality. Instead he seeks to discover and justify the moral rules by examining our moral judgements. Using this method he captures morality and its rules to a degree not before seen. I cannot recommend highly enough reading this text.

By emphasizing the importance of theatrical performance, the book engages with continuing debates over the cultural function of the early modern stage and with scholarship on the status of modern authorship. When we consider playwrights in relation to the theatre rather than the printed book, they appear less as 'authors' than as figures whose social position and epistemological presuppositions were very similar to the craftsmen, surveyors, and engineers who began to flourish during the sixteenth century and whose mathematical knowledge made them increasingly sought after by men of wealth and power.

I don't really know much about Godzilla or care much about Japan -- I like Brad's voice

Have you ever tried to read any of Dogen's Shobogenzo? I have. A bunch of times, actually, and failed, and decided I was just hopelessly not the right person to be a zennie (though I practice in the Theravadan school, I try to keep up). But I follow Brad's blog, and even though I'm not exactly his target audience -- I was never into punk music, I don't really know much about Godzilla or care much about Japan -- I like Brad's voice. So I've been reading Don't Be a Jerk, and I love it, and I feel like I actually understand Dogen a tiny little bit. Note Carefully: this is NOT a translation -- it's a retelling, or a paraphrasing, of Dogen's first 20 or so Shobogenzo chapters. But Brad includes lots of commentary, including the Japanese kanji and other people's translations of difficult passages. And he also makes it very very fun to read some really difficult teachings. So where Nishijima (Brad's teacher) translates the last line of Genjo Koan as "Because the nature of air is to be ever present, the behavior of Buddhists makes the Earth manifest itself as gold, and ripens the Milky Way into delicious cheese." I have no idea what that means. Brad quotes Nishijima almost exactly, and then adds, "And everybody likes cheese, right? Except vegans. And even most of them like it. They just don't like how it's produced. Which I respect." If this kind of thing makes you laugh out loud, this is your book. If it makes you rage and roll your eyes, save your money.

I am pretty impressed and tickled by the whole thing. This book is just a brilliant interpretation. As he says, it is not meant as a line by line rewriting, and more of a quick thumb nail glimpse with a good bit of humor and fairly free interpretation. Nonetheless, Brad manages to convey the heart and sense of each passage. Just wonderful, a takes a kind of genius to pull this off. I think what he has done is just a blast and really funny too, while still being poignant and amazing.

I think it still helps that I am already pretty familiar with the standard English translations that he is playing off though, so It may still be a little hard to follow for folks not so familiar with Dogen pretty well (and hard to follow anyway even if you are because, well, Dogen is Dogen even when Bradicized). However, this book may still be one of the best first introductions to Dogen I can think of. I think the book is suited to anyone interested in Dogen, and easy reading overall, funny, insightful and amazing. He did his historical homework too and did a masterful job.

Parts are hilarious, including how he took all of Dogen's classical style poetry and made em cheezy rhymes!

Gateway to Shobogenzo

I highly doubt I would have been interesting in reading Shobogenzo if it wasn't for this book. The paraphrasing is very readable and funny at times without losing its meaning or overall seriousness. After each paraphrasing, Brad discusses the passages in more depth and even why he chose certain words/phrases to paraphrase. He also discusses what other various translations have used for a particular passage. I found this book fascinating and will definitely read again.

Good book to learn theory of C6 Lap Steel

If you want to learn lap steel and learn the music theory to understand what you are doing, this is your book. If you want some quick licks, this is not it. I gave if 4 stars because the Kindle format is not ideal for reading music. I recommend that you buy the ebook and DVDs directly at www.joedocmusic.com. The ebook is provided as a pdf file which allows you to change screen format as you wish and to print sections. The DVDs also provide visual lessons to go along with the book.

Absolute Gem

This book is an absolute gem that packs a wealth of information into 140 pages. If you are a guitar player with a music theory background or not, you'll love Joe's explanation of lead voicing as it relates to going up and down the neck of the lap steel. This book is not geared toward learning licks. Instead, it gives you the knowledge and understanding of how "licks" are made. I was drawn to C6 lap steel tuning, as I loved the layout of the chord inversions. I studied the neck on my own, and watch tons of online videos. Before buying this book, I was unable to link my music theory background to the lap steel. Joe's book gives a lot of detail into how to link these inversions together using lead voicing and parallel motion. I spent the afternoon with this book, and I am already playing way better. If you are completely new to lap steel or guitar player coming to lap steel, this book is definitely worth the investment.

This book is the best music instruction book I have read (guitar, bass, mandolin, slide, lap steel).
I really appreciate Joe's explanation of music theory. Although I've played guitar for over fifty years, music theory always intimidated me. Joe made it easy enough for this GOP (Grizzled Old Picker) to understand!
Techniques covered in detail, Tabs, Charts, MP4 file examples. It's all there. Simply Excellent!
