The Hearts of Darkness: How White Writers Created the Racist Image of Africa, by Milton Allimadi

A critique of Western media's "tribalization" of African news coverage, beginning with the accounts of the European so-called explorers who went to "discover" Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries and including the coverage of Africa by Western newspapers, including The New York Times, from the 19th century to contemporary coverage. Includes exclusively obtained documents from The New York Times' archives documenting the racism of some editors and reporters at that newspaper towards Africans.

From the Publisher
Step Aside Joseph Conrad!

The Hearts of Darkness… exposes Western newspapers’, including The New York Times’, culpability in racist representations of Africa. The book digs deep into the history of the negative, racist media representations of Africans and people of African descent that persist in contemporary America. The book includes a historical analysis of the "tribalization" of Africa by The New York Times, Time Magazine, Newsweek, National Geographic and The New Yorker. It contains exclusive letters from The New York Times' archives exposing the racism of some editors and reporters involved in that newspaper's early African coverage, including two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, the late Homer Bigart. The book is on its third print run.

From the Author
I hope my book will educate the general public and practicing journalists about the dangers of demonization of non-white peoples all over the world.

Feast of facts

Hearts of Darkness is a must read. Allimadi uses numerous examples consisting of newspaper articles, anecdotes, interviews, correspondence letters, and excerpts from books to show how white writers and ultimately, major western news organizations, over time, shaped an enduring racist image of Africa.
If you are not compelled by the quality of each individual example in the book, fine! What cannot be easily disputed is that the sheer volume of the examples Allimadi provides to support his claim, at the very least reveals a historical pattern of sharply irresponsible reporting of Africa by white writers and the western press.

A must for anyone study of the Afrika and
Afrikan-American experience anywhere in the
world.
Brother Milton has made a substantial contribution
to the arsenal of evidence justifying Reparations,
showing that the CRIMES against BLACK Humanity
extend all the way into modern times, and do not
end with the abolition of slavery.
Brother Milton did a great interview with me
on Sunday July 13th 2003 on DRUMBEAT Radio-Net Cast
from Boston, MA USA ( WRBB 104.9 FM), adding to the
long list of my informative,, educational and inspiring
programs for my growing Boston FM and worldwide ON-
LINE listening audience.
This work clearly belongs among those few other works
of Afrika and Afrikan American OURSTORIANS who uncovered
that which is hidden.

The dark hearts of racist writers
By Kathryn Barrett-Gaines
I am not alone in being tired of white people telling us about Africa. In this delightfully brief book, Milton Allimadi does more than be tired of it. In tracing a story of white people telling us about Africa, Allimadi exposes long entrenched roots of the racism that recent events have shown us is not letting up or going away. Allimadi rereads back through centuries to find specific evidence of white people, in and out of Africa, deciding that black lives do not matter. Many people will see the roots of their own racism in these writings. Allimade exposes a ground zero of racism in Baker, Stanley, Lugard, Conrad, Gordon, and Richburg that has infected most white people, and many black people as well. The only cure for racism is knowledge, and Allimadi mines a deep deposit of racism and its practitioners in the archives of the New York Times, Time magazine, and National Geographic magazine. In talking to retired editors and reporters from these publications, Allimadi reveals himself as researcher activist. He describes publishers afraid of his book, uncovering layer upon layer of racist thinking by editors and writers in England and the US. Racism against Africans is the root of racism against African Americans. This is why Hearts of Darkness will be the first book my students read in my History of Africa courses. Anti-racism is as good a reason as any to consider African history from African perspectives. Read African authors, and start with Milton Allimadi.
