Arthur Kornberg's book is a modern-day Book of Five Rings that replaces the medium of swordsmanship with that of biochemistry, particularly enzymology. As Kornberg describes his successive research problems, the challenges they presented, and the ultimate accomplishments that resulted, he provides us with a primer in the strategies needed to do scientific work of great significance. Moreover, these strategies are played out in the context of solving some of the great biochemical problems of the twentieth century.

The ability to manipulate and alter DNA fired a revolution that forever changed the nature of biology. Arthur Kornberg is a primary architect of that revolution, arguably one of the two or three most important biologists of this time. Prior to Kornberg, genetic information and later DNA were imbued by biologists with an almost vitalistic aura. Kornberg demonstrated that DNA is a molecule synthesized by enzymes, like all other chemical constituents of the cell. More important, he trained a school of scientists who focused on and discovered many of the enzymatic activities that act on DNA. It is these enzymes in particular that allow modern "genetic engineering."

For the Love of Enzymes does not describe a single lucky or hard-won accomplishment. Rather, it is the story of thirty years of decisive campaigns, nearly all of which led to insights of major significance. In relating his story, Kornberg never avoids the difficult question of "why": why he felt classical nutritional studies had reached a plateau, why he turned to enzymology as a discipline in which the important answers would be found, and why he believes the study of enzymes will grow ever more important as we face the new scientific frontier of brain function.

This book will challenge students of biology and chemistry at all levels who want to do important work rather than simply follow popular trends. ENZYMES CREATE LIFE

The importance of enzymes was first impressed on me years ago (1981) by Dr. William Donald Kelley through his explanation and use of pancreatic enzymes in his cancer treatment protocol One Answer To Cancer an Ecological Approach To TH. (More recent accounts of Dr. Kelley's protocol are presented in Cancer: Curing the Incurable Without Surgery, Chemotherapy, or Radiation and One Man Alone: An Investigation of Nutrition, Cancer, and William Donald Kelley) Around 1998 I came across and read the classic "Enzyme Nutrition" by Dr. Edward Howell Enzyme Nutrition which imparted to me the vital importance of enzymes to the essence of life. As a consequence, I always strive to eat raw foods as much as possible and to take digestive enzymes regularly based on these teachings.

However, I have always been intrigued by the mystery of when and how life is born (erupts) from inanimate matter and the hints were that enzymes played a key role in that evolutionary step. In my recent book searches I came across Arthur Kornberg's "For the Love of Enzymes" and bought it on the basis of the recommendations with the hope that it might shed some light on the process of the eruption of life.

I was captivated by the book and could not put it down until finished. It clearly defined what an enzyme was in chemical terms. It certainly confirmed to me that life would not exist were it not for enzymes. Although the explicit details of the step by step process of the evolution of first life still remains to be unveiled (to my present knowledge), there remains no doubt in my mind that enzymes are the vital "spark" which makes and keeps the "engine" of life going. This book has filled many gaps in my pseudo-layman's knowledge of life, biology, and health. In addition, it gives the insight into the form, creation and manipulation of DNA for which enzymes are essential, and the resultant techniques of genetic engineering. It also presents an inspiring account of the pursuit of science from one very prominent person's (Nobel recipient's) perspective. I highly recommend this book to any layman interested in the origin of life, biology, and health - and certainly any aspiring health practitioner or student in the health field or the broad field of biology, chemistry, and biochemistry. It was mind-expanding and mind-blowing to me! Enjoy!

When Harville Hendrix writes about relationships, he discusses them not just as an educator and a therapist, but as a man who has himself been through a failed marriage. Hendrix felt the sting of his divorce intensely because he believed it signaled not only his failure as a husband but also his failure as a couples counselor. Investigating why his marriage dissolved led him to start looking into the psychology of love. Marriage, he ultimately discovered, is the "practice of becoming passionate friends."

As a result of his research, Hendrix created a therapy he calls Imago Relationship Therapy. In it, he combines what he's learned in a number of disciplines, including the behavioral sciences, depth psychology, cognitive therapy, and Gestalt therapy, to name just a few. He expounds upon this approach in Getting the Love You Want: A Guide for Couples. About the Author

HARVILLE HENDRIX, PH.D., has more than 30 years' experience as an educator and therapist. He specializes in working with couples in private practice, teaching marital therapy to therapists, and conducting couples workshops across the country. Dr. Hendrix is the founder/director of the IMAGO Institute for Relationship Therapy. He lives in New Jersey and New Mexico.

Must read for those in a relationship

I rarely write reviews but felt compelled to write one about this book. It was loaned to me by my therapist. My wife and I have been struggling in our marriage for years and no matter what I do (or she does), we always seem to fall back on the same old patterns of behavior that don't seem to work. Falling out of love has been a very painful experience indeed.
The situations described in the book were very, very recognizable to me and at times I felt it described it described me and my own feelings exactly. Read this book, even if it is just for the realization that you are not alone in your struggles to make something out of your marriage.
Nobody goes into marriage thinking they are going get divorced some day, but the statistics are grim. Roughly half of all marriages end up in divorce and of the remaining marriages probably 9 out of 10 couples sooner or later end up leading parallel lives where they try to find happiness and fulfillment outside of the relationship with their spouse. That means roughly only 1 in 20 couples end up building a lasting and fulfilling relationship that will last a lifetime. Are we expecting too much of marriage? Few of us would undertake an endeavor knowing there is only a 5% of succeeding, yet we do it anyway.
The book goes on to illustrate that we chose our partners for very specific reasons that few of us are even aware of. Out of thousands of potential partners we are attracted to some people that subconsciously meet very specific character and personality traits. In a sense, we all marry into our problems, the very things that attract us to our partners, become the very same issues that drive a wedge between us.
The book is very practical too in that offers specific exercises and guidelines for couples on how to interact with each other. But don't expect it to be easygoing by any means. I realize now that marriage takes a lot of hard work and commitment every day to make and stay successful. You have to make it a top priority in your life and take nothing for granted. Expect to do a lot of soul searching, be prepared to relive some gut wrenching and painful experiences from the past, be wiling to learn and undo the conditioned automated responses that you have always used, be prepared to be brutally honest to yourself and your spouse. I fear it might be too late for my own marriage but once you get through this catharsis, I do believe you might actually come out with a happier and more fulfilling relationship on the other end.
Regardless, I implore you to read this book. It might help you save your marriage or relationship before it's too late, but even if it does not, it might make you a better person, it will certainly help you build more meaningful relationships with other people and give you a better chance at building lasting and more meaningful future relationships. easy, and if you want to learn to communicate ...

This book has saved our 5 year marriage. Period. Of course, it takes time and effort on our part to read it and do the exercises in it. It is clear, easy, and if you want to learn to communicate effectively whether you've been in relationship 1 year or over 30 years, get it and give yourselves the gift of giving - to each other. However, you always give to yourself first. We went to Rick Brown's workshop in Charleston, SC. He teaches the Imago work based on this book and does an admirable job of relaying the information, but I was really disappointed in the workshop because he would not take questions from participants during his presentation, and he only allowed two couples the whole weekend to work together in front of the group. Because we are motivated, we could have done just as well to get a room for a week, read the book to each other and practice the exercises. But there are other workshops around the country. Go for it - even if you are moving headlong toward divorce! Divorce is not the learning experience you really want! Let go of your pride and hurt and do THIS!

A strong dose of reality

The thesis of this book may seem really cold to anybody who has ever fallen in love. But to those veterans of heartbreak who are still wondering "What happened?", Harville's insights offer brilliant illumination. He has a theory about why we fall in love, no less. And why almost inevitably 95% of us fall out of love within 2-5 years! And before you and your significant other reach the point of no return, what you can do to save your relationship. It requires leaving the magical land of unconscious, childish wish-fulfillment, and entering the realm of conscious, adult relationship. Not for the faint of heart, or for the confirmed "romantic".

A beauty-filled human being!

I just purchased this book after taking a weekend workshop with Tao!
The book is a simple reflection of the deeply wise person that Tao is! Unfortunately one may not be able to experience her humble, joyful, grateful spirit by reading her book. The mention of the cd on the cover of the book is misleading, though it says nowhere that it is included though it would be easy to assume it. I was fortunate to hear a meditation from the CD and found that both Tao's voice accompanied by the music composed by Valerie Romanoff were a beautiful, relaxing form of meditation. Not only that, one may get a sense of Tao's sweet personality by listening to her voice.
I highly recommend buying the CD along with her book!

A small quibble with this recording:

The other volumes in this series are readings of the standard English translation by Scott Moncrieff (this is also true of the equally excellent recordings by John Rowe, which, alas comprise only the first two volumes of _Remembrance of Things Past_).

Moncrieff died before he could complete this last volume (_Time Regained_), and the accompanying English translation is usually that of Frederick Blossom.

However, this recording is of a translation by "David Whiting".

While I personally would have preferred the use of Blossom's translation, I have, in principle, no strenuous objection to this change. But that said: 1] this change of translators is not made clear (i.e. so far as I can tell it is indicated only during the introduction on the recording itself --for example, neither Audible nor Amazon mention it in their blurbs for the recording); and 2] I wish that the original publisher (Naxos) and/or reader (Jason) had selected a published version of a translation for this recording (that is, so far as I can determine, Whiting's translation is not otherwise available aside from this recording).

About the Author
Peter Tickner has a Masters Degree from City University Business School (in Internal Auditing and Management), he is a Fellow and Chartered member of the Institute of Internal Auditors and a member and director of the Institute of Counter Fraud Specialists. Peter started his professional auditing and investigating career as an external auditor in the National Health Service in the 1970s. He was appointed Head of Internal Audit at Her Majesty’s Treasury in February 1988. In 1995 Peter left the Treasury on appointment as the Director of Internal Audit for the Metropolitan Police in London, a post he held until early retirement in 2009. While at the Metropolitan Police, Peter set up and ran a highly successful investigation team looking at internal and contractor fraud and corruption.
